Opportunity Youth represent untapped potential across North Texas and investing in their success strengthens our entire workforce and economy.
In the Dallas–Fort Worth region alone, more than 110,000 young adults are disconnected from school and work. Through the DFW Opportunity Youth Collaborative, Educate Texas is working with partners to create a coordinated approach that reconnects young adults to education, meaningful careers, and long-term economic mobility.
By aligning education, workforce, and community efforts, we can close opportunity gaps and support young Texans in realizing their full potential.

Their model supports students from 9th-12th grade, building clarity, confidence, and competence while guiding every student, regardless of pathway, through the college and career process.

Lori Haltom and Staci Duncan from Midland ISD highlighted a powerful, student-centered model focused on increasing postsecondary success through early engagement and consistent support.
By meeting students one-on-one—from middle school through senior year—and guiding them through dual credit, college planning, and financial aid, their approach ensures every student is seen, supported, and prepared.
A strong example of how partnership and intentional design can expand opportunities and help students envision a future beyond graduation. 👏

Andrew Cervantes and Dustin Nieto from San Antonio ISD presented “Beat the Heat,” a targeted approach to closing the gap between college acceptance and actual enrollment.
By removing barriers like transportation, providing hands-on enrollment support, and ensuring students leave with a class schedule in hand, their model directly tackles summer melt and keeps students on track.
A strong example of how intentional follow-through and real-time support can turn college intent into college enrollment. 👏

This year’s TXCAN Pitch Competition showcased powerful, student-centered solutions from leaders across Texas from Midland ISD, San Antonio ISD, and McAllen ISD. ✏️
Each team presented innovative strategies to expand access and support students across the pipeline.
🏆 Congratulations to Andrew Cervantes and Dustin Nieto of San Antonio ISD for winning the competition with “Beat the Heat,” earning a $5,000 award to advance their work addressing summer melt through transportation, real-time enrollment support, and continued follow-up.

A strong reminder that when we remove barriers and provide intentional, consistent support, student success becomes the standard. 👏

Strong systems create stronger outcomes for students.

This week, educators and leaders from across Texas gathered for the , hosted in partnership with the Texas Education Agency, to strengthen the connections that help students move successfully from high school to college, careers, and economic opportunity.

Through Texas College and Career Readiness School Models, districts, colleges, workforce partners, and communities are working together to ensure students can earn meaningful credentials while still in high school and graduate with more options for their future.

The results continue to demonstrate what is possible when systems align around students:

• 45% of Early College High School graduates earned an associate degree, compared with 1% of non-CCRSM graduates.

• P-TECH students earned Level I or II certificates at rates significantly higher than their peers.

• More than one-third of CCRSM graduates earned industry-based certifications.

These outcomes do not happen by chance. They are made possible through strong partnerships among K-12 districts, higher education institutions, employers, and state leaders who share a commitment to expanding opportunity for every student.

Thank you to our partners at the Texas Education Agency and to the educators and leaders across Texas who continue to make this work possible.

Together, we are helping more students earn credentials of value, access postsecondary opportunities, and pursue thriving futures.
