Career Connect Texas (CCTX), an initiative of Educate Texas, has worked with seven community colleges over the last year to redesign pathways with a focus on the integration of work-based learning opportunities.

"I wanted to expose myself to other careers I could pursue,” said Justin Chavez of Tarrant County College (TCC).

At 18, Justin left his four-year university after one semester, unsure where to take his career. He searched for exposure to more career paths and eventually discovered the Construction Management Program at TCC. Justin credits his position today as an estimator and project engineer to the relationships he built through participation in this program. The work-based learning experience allowed him to network, hone his passion, network, refine his skills as a manager, and now work towards a bachelor's degree in construction management, helping to design and build his community.

“One day, I want to manage 80-million-dollar projects. As a construction manager, you can get contracted out and work from anywhere in the world.”

CCTX is a network that links community colleges and workforce organizations to provide practical training for high-demand careers. Learn more: bit.ly/3q2M1zE

Deputy Director of Higher Education Policy at Educate Texas, Danielle Zaragoza, was invited to speak at the U.S. Department of Education's "Raise the Bar" transfer summit. "Supporting transfer students is supporting the populations that need it most, and enhancing credit mobility is one of the most important strategies to improve equity in our higher education systems."

Zaragoza was chosen to lead a discussion on state college transfer policies following her recently published "The State of State Transfer Policy" report. Her session focused on conducting policy audits and the positive work the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is doing to simplify transfer pathways. "States are starting to change the way they talk about transfer, and there is a greater focus on the student supports (including advising and targeted financial aid) that are necessary after a student moves institutions. "

Policies regarding students' school transfers should offer clear routes and supportive measures to ensure the success of each individual.
