What a great evening of community, music, and celebrating our First Amendment freedoms. On Sunday, June 14, we were proud to partner with two special events: a watch party at Winn Dems HQ with Indivisible Iowa, where we listened to inspiring words from Jane Fonda and other activists and sang along to resistance songs, new and old. The other Winn Dems event was held with perfect weather in the beautiful Northeast Iowa countryside with a concert co-hosted with Backroads.us. These two events connected us in community and reminded us that democracy is strongest when people focus on what unites us.

Winneshiek County Democrats represented at the Iowa Democratic Party Convention Saturday, June 13, at Des Moines Roosevelt High School. They listened with pride as Decorah's native son, Rob Sand, candidate for governor, spoke of being influenced by his parents, Leslie on the left end, Kevin with the black Rob Sand shirt, his faith, and teachers growing up in Decorah. The delegation heard from other candidates, including Dave Muhlbauer, Rob's pick for Lt. Governor. Observations include not enough 'Josh Turek for U.S. Senate' signs, the many 25-35 year-olds were an active presence during deliberations, and candidate for Iowa Agriculture Secretary, Chris Jones, got a standing ovation for standing up for Iowa's water quality and speaking out to support farmers as they, hopefully, take up farming practices less dependent on chemicals and big corporations. As usual, the Iowa Democrats adopted a proud progressive people-centered platform. Next to Leslie Sand, Deborah Bishop, Becky Olafsen, Kevin Sand, Peter Olafsen, and Jeff Thurlow- Thurlow for Iowa 63.

Decorah held its annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 25. Walking together from Carl Selland Park east to the Veterans Memorial at Mary Christopher Park, were the Winneshiek County Democrats and the Winneshiek County Republicans. Leading the group and carrying the American flag, were Chair Toby Cain for the Democrats, and Chair Thomas Hansen for the Republicans. The House District 63 candidates for each party also walked with the group, Democrat Jeff Thurlow, and incumbent Republican Michael Bergan. The parade announcer remarked that it was good to see the two parties walking together. He encouraged the parade observers to vote in the upcoming primary and general elections.
