Tonight we held our first FY27 budget hearing to consider options for our next operating budget that starts on July 1st. Although things are tighter than years past, we are committed to not proposing a tax increase. Residents of this State, and County, have been burdened with unexpected increases that left many people struggling to survive. It will not be an easy task to balance next years budget but we are committed to tightening our belt wherever necessary and carefully considering needs before wants. We are still on firm financial footing, with a healthy reserve to handle any unexpected emergencies, without going into debt. My goal has always been to be honest, and transparent, so I wanted to pass this along to let everyone know that we are not taking the easy road of raising taxes. Instead, we’re going to lead by example and run as efficiently as possible until we have no other options. When, and if the time ever comes in the future, we will work closely with our residents to adopt a plan that works for everyone.

On June 12th and 13th there will be a 2 day Caesar Rodney reenactment ride starting in Dover and ending in Philadelphia. I spoke to one of the organizers today and on the 13th, after they cross the Reedy Point Bridge, the horses will rest in the field at the Community Center. Stop by and check them out and go to 250ride.org for more information. Thank you to my good friend Ciro Poppiti for bringing history back to life.

The 250 Ride reenacts Caesar Rodney’s historic journey while honoring the Unheard Voices of the Revolution through education, events, and living history leading to America’s 250th anniversary.

I would like to thank all the volunteers that made our Bicentennial celebration a success. It was a great day filled with memories of the past and present. I’m proud to call Delaware City home and even more proud to be your Mayor. It was an honor to deliver the speech below surrounded by generations of residents that I have looked up to for my years. One of those residents in attendance, Herb Netsch, was instrumental in teaching me the true meaning of leadership as I was a young member of the fire company and continues to support me today. He is one of the people that helped contribute to the success I’ve been able to enjoy. In a sense, that symbolizes the culture of our community. Residents helping each other and preparing the next generation to lead and be successful and quite frankly, the secret to our success. Thank you everyone for a great day!!!

As I previously reported, the refinery has a boiler down and they are using backup pollution controls to burn off emissions. The main pollutant concern is sulfur dioxide which should be below 75 parts per billion. To monitor live data, through the DNREC monitoring station at the ball field, go to de.gov/airdata. At the bottom of the screen, click on sulfur dioxide and it will display the real time reading. As I’m typing this, it’s currently at zero but I will be monitoring throughout the day.

DNREC will monitor the refinery’s repair work closely and keep the public informed as new information becomes available.
