The Delaware City Library is an independent public library in the New Castle County Library System and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to create and promote educational, recreational, and cultural enrichment, and provide community members of all ages with free access to the resources and tools they need to thrive in the 21st century. We have 3 meeting rooms and 9 computers avail

able for public use, as well as a collection of over 24,000 circulating items and lots of programs for all ages!

Happy Juneteenth! 🌟 Originating in Texas, Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas at the end of the Civil War. In the following years, celebrations became popular among formerly enslaved African Americans in the South; these celebrations eventually evolved into what is now Juneteenth. In 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, solidifying the commemorative day into a federal holiday.
