Representatives will be available to share information about the Downtown Development District, small business resources, grants and funding opportunities, historic preservation programs and incentives, and other resources available to residents, businesses and developers.

⚠️Mosquito Control Update- West Nile Virus Detected in Sentinel Chicken:

Information received from DNREC’s Mosquito Control Section indicates that a sentinel chicken in our area recently tested positive for West Nile Virus, signaling that the virus is circulating among local mosquitoes and wild birds. The chicken is not harmed and does not spread the virus; sentinel chickens are used to help DNREC detect mosquito-borne diseases. As a result, residents may notice increased mosquito-control activity in and around the Delaware City area as DNREC works to reduce the mosquito population most likely to transmit the virus.

The aerial treatment seen earlier today was a granular larvicide treatment at the Army Corps dredge spoil site adjacent to Harbor Estates, targeting mosquito larvae in stagnant water.

DNREC reminds residents to take common-sense precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors in mosquito-prone areas; applying insect repellent containing 10%–30% DEET according to label instructions; and avoiding mosquito-infested areas and times of peak mosquito activity around dusk, dawn, and at night.

West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in Delaware for the first time in 2026 in the sentinel chickens that help DNREC monitor the state for mosquito-borne illnesses.

1. A message from DNREC-MOSQUITO CONTROL

Weather permitting; the Delaware Mosquito Control Section plans the following insecticide application(s) during the evening hours on Wednesday, August 19, 2026:

Application of Zenivex E4 (etofenprox) with a truck-mounted sprayer to control adult mosquitoes in the following areas:

In and near New Castle and Delaware City.
Near Wilmington, Bear, Middletown, Townsend, Clayton, and Smyrna.
For notification purposes, spraying is planned for the following zone(s): 21, 22, 29, 30, 35, 37, 43, 62, 69, and 75.

All insecticides to be used are registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for mosquito control and will be applied according to EPA-approved label instructions. The EPA has determined that these insecticides do not pose unreasonable risks to human health, wildlife, or the environment.

All insecticides to be used are registered with the USEPA for mosquito control and will be applied according to USEPA approved label instructions. The USEPA has determined that the insecticides to be used do not pose unreasonable risks to human health, wildlife, or the environment.
