Senior Support Services - Denver

Senior Support Services - Denver SSS is Denver's only day shelter exclusively for people age 60+. As the need grew, our services expanded.

Senior Support Services (SSS) was established in 1976 when six churches in downtown Denver came together to assist low-income and homeless seniors who were being displaced by downtown redevelopment. In 1979, we began to provide day shelter, coffee, one hot meal per day and case management services to assist seniors in obtaining benefits and finding affordable housing. In 1995, SSS bought a buildin

g at 18th Avenue & Emerson Street where the full range of services โ€“ one-stop shopping โ€“ are provided for hungry and homeless seniors.

Over the last 36 years, the ADA has made a huge difference for those living with disabilities or mobility issues, including older adults - and it all started here in Denver!

As we celebrate 36 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we also want to remember that the disability rights movement didn't begin with the ADA. It was built through the courage, persistence, and direct action of disabled activists who demanded equal access and dignity.

In The Sunday Story, NPR's Joseph Shapiro and Colorado Public Radio's Stephanie Wolf explore the history of the disability rights movementโ€”from the 1978 Denver bus protests led by the "Gang of 19," which helped secure accessible public transit, to today's ongoing fight to protect the hard-won right of people with disabilities to live independently.
