All of us at Derby Public Library mourn the loss of country music icon, Dolly Parton, who sadly passed away at age 80.

Above and beyond her ubiquitous music, Dolly's selfless acts of kindness and philanthropy touched so many lives and will continue to do so. In particular, the "Imagination Library" she created for children under 5 will help carry on her incredible legacy.

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly originally started her Imagination Library for children within her home county of Sevier County in East Tennessee. More than 30 years later, that same program now gifts millions of free books each month to children across the United States as well as in Canada, the UK, Australia and Ireland.

As she so eloquently said, “The seeds of dreams found in books and planted in your community can grow across the world.”

And the impact of her vision is truly remarkable:

- Over 300 million books have been gifted globally since the program started in 1995.
- More than 3 million free books are mailed out every month.
- About 1 in 6 children under the age of five in the U.S. participate in the program.

As Dolly once proudly reflected, "I always loved books. I was hungry for knowledge, a curious kid. And If I'm remembered 100 years from now, I hope it will not be for looks, but for books."

And indeed she will be....

On Wednesday. September 9th at **5:30 PM** We're Turning the Page to our next 250th themed book club meeting!

Join Derby Public Library for a powerful discussion of "The Day the World Came to Town" by Jim DeFede.

Leading the program is DPL’s Technical/Reference Librarian, Marc Weissman—who was among the “plane people” unexpectedly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland on September 11, 2001. Marc will share his firsthand experience of the extraordinary kindness shown by local residents during a time of global crisis.

He’ll also reflect on his visits to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in NYC and the Flight 93 National Memorial in PA, offering personal insight into the lasting impact of that day.

Please note: This program includes sensitive subject matter and images that may be difficult for some attendees. Discretion will be exercised as much as possible.

Per GoodReads:

When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.
