The mission of the Derby Neck Library is to provide its patrons access to the ideas and information that are necessary to allow them to fully participate in the life of the community and in a democratic society. This mission is accomplished:
- By providing physical access to materials in a variety of formats
- By providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere
- By providing programs, materials and acti

vities which stimulate interest in education, reading and viewing
- By providing informational and recreational programs and activities for patrons of all ages
- By working with other institutions and organizations to share and exchange ideas and materials
- By maintaining an active management program that fully utilizes human, financial and material resources
- By assisting patrons in locating information and obtaining material for various projects

We're raffling off TWO tickets to see the iconic riot grrrl band Bikini Kill at College Street Music Hall on September 21st! Support the Derby Neck Library and they could be yours.

We will be announcing the winner on September 8th after our Riot Grrrl: A Sampler program featuring Jenna Freedman, founder of the zine collection at Barnard University. The last riot grrrl convention took place 30 years ago, but the themes expressed in riot grrrl zines still have resonance today. Girls and women (gender expansive) built powerful communities and got their issues noticed by a mainstream that they ultimately rejected. They discussed girlhood, sexuality, race, punk, mutual aid, do it yourself work, feminism, body image, capitalism and other subjects. They developed an iconography of handwriting, Hello Kitty graphics, stars, collage, stick figure drawings, and symbols of girl power. Today, libraries collect and preserve these important works that platform voices previously left out of the cultural memory.
