The 2026 Summer Meals Program launched with an overwhelming response, distributing 10,000 meals (1,000 meal kits) before 10:30AM.

Thank you to the dedicated district staff and volunteers whose enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment made this successful kickoff possible. Their efforts ensured that any children ages 1-18 could receive free meal kits as the program began another summer of serving families in our community.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteers from the Woodlawn United Methodist Church, DHS AFJROTC and to our hardworking operations staff, including food service, transportation, maintenance and grounds teams, who assembled meal kits and directed traffic with care and efficiency.

2,357 total meals were handed out today! Each kit weighed approximately 12 pounds and provided five nutritious breakfasts and lunches, making a meaningful difference for the children in our community.

Families with children ages 1-18 can pick up one meal kit per child each week on Tuesdays, June 2-July 28, at the Central Kitchen (610 E. Market, Derby). No address or income requirements are needed to participate. Meal services will run June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7, 14, 21, 28 from 9AM-1PM (or sooner if kits run out). First-come, first-served. * Reminder to have your children with you in-person if you have not yet verified your family size.

Weather Reminder: In case of inclement weather (such as lightning within 10 miles or a severe weather warning), meal distribution will pause until conditions are safe. Cancellations may occur without prior notice if weather conditions do not improve.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone helping ensure no child goes hungry!

Summer meal kits are fully funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

Derby Public Schools is proud to offer FREE summer meals again this year!

Each meal kit includes five breakfasts and five lunches per child, making it easier than ever to keep kids nourished during summer break. Some items require refrigeration and/or cooking. Please refrigerate or freeze perishable items promptly after pick-up.

**How to Help Streamline Pick-Up**
Please be patient during meal pick-ups and follow the designated traffic pattern. You must turn off Madison onto Bulldog Drive, then turn right onto Louisa to enter the pick-up line. (Follow the red arrow on the map.) There are no alternate routes.

If you did not verify your children in advance or don’t have your assigned number, your children must be present in the vehicle to confirm household size. Families who did not verify in advance may complete verification on-site with children present and will receive a number for future pick-ups.

**Meals in Motion**
Each Tuesday, Derby Public Schools bus will transport families to summer meal distribution at the Central Kitchen in Derby to and from the following locations: Wineteer Elementary at 10AM (base housing gate will be open), Cooper Elementary at 11AM and Oaklawn Elementary at 12PM. Children must ride the bus with a parent/guardian unless the household size has already been verified.

**Meal Distribution Weather Notice**
In the event of inclement weather (lightning within 10 miles or a severe weather warning), Derby Public Schools will pause meal distribution until conditions are safe. Pick-ups may be canceled without notice if weather conditions do not improve.

If your child requires meal substitutions due to dietary restrictions, please contact the Food Service Office at (316) 788-8419 or email [email protected] at least five days in advance. A completed meal modification form must be on file.

Summer meal kits are fully funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. USDA is an equal opportunity provider, employer and lender.
