I stand in solidarity with the family of Kadir Skinner, who was brutally murdered by Wilmington Police last month. My heart is broken for the Skinner and Dollard families, who have lost a child in one of the worst ways possible and I am angry that we have lost another community member to the same senseless state violence many of us have protested over the years.
As elected officials, we owe more to the family and to our state. Since the police murdered George Floyd, Lymond Moses, Jeremy McDole, and others, the Delaware General Assembly has promised police accountability and transparency. But the changes we’ve voted on have not been enough. Police brutality continues to plague our community.
We have not done enough as a legislative body to fix the issue of police brutality in Delaware.
I’m committing to supporting the transformation our state needs to:
1. Make all police disciplinary records available to the public
2. Ensure independent, civilian oversight of police by ensuring that police accountability boards have investigatory and subpoena powers
3. Establish a clear process for public access to video footage through the Freedom of Information Act
4. Ensure police have a duty to intervene to prevent another officer from using unlawful force
5. Shift our public safety approach by establishing Community Response Teams that include trained mental health and social workers, mediators, and outreach workers, with the goal of reducing police interactions that could result in injury or death.
Justice for Kadir Skinner means making sure this doesn’t keep happening.
