Too many animals currently sit in shelters across our state waiting for their forever family. These are cats and dogs that were found as strays, saved from abusive environments, surrendered by past owners, or unethically bred in puppy mills. Legislation I have sponsored with Kim Williams State Representative, 19th District and various stakeholders and advocates will effectively reduce the number of abuse cases we see towards domesticated animals.

HB 131 will prohibit the profit pet shops receive by sacrificing animal welfare. Upon the signing of this legislation, pet shops will now abide by harsher and more restrictive guidelines of where they receive pets they intend to sell at their stores. Ensuring our retailers that they are getting animals from verified breeders, sellers, and organizations diminishes the abundance of sick, mistreated, or abused animals that are frequently sold by sellers across the state.

Thank you to the numerous advocacy groups: The Office of Animal Welfare, Faithful Friends. the Brandywine Valley SPCA, Humane Animal Partners, Humane World for Animals, Animal League of Defense, and First State Animal Center for collaborating with Rep. Williams and I on this legislation, for putting animals at the forefront of the conversation, and for giving them a voice.

It’s our responsibility to listen to our business community and promote ways we can assist their operations – especially when demand is there. I was proud the Senate passed my SB 168 on Tuesday, which will allow licensed businesses like retail package stores to enter into contracts with third-party delivery services to deliver alcoholic beverages to consumers. Not only is this a business-friendly bill, but it is consumer friendly and will boost options for Delawareans.

Less than a year after breaking ground, Family Promise of Northern New Castle County’s new shelter is finally complete! I had the honor of visiting and touring the new facility off Milltown Road before a ceremonial ribbon cutting, as we recognized this breathtaking shelter that will change the lives of so many Delawareans in need. This new shelter will give our neighbors hope and opportunity as we continue our work to eradicate homelessness in all forms.
