There’s just something special about the first day of school, the backpacks, the big smiles (& maybe a few sleepy ones 😊). It was wonderful welcoming our students back at Warner & Shortlidge.

It truly takes a village to make a school community special. Some of my favorite moments were with the folks who make it all happen every day; our crossing guard getting everyone safely through the front door, our child nutrition leaders serving up breakfast & lunch & all the caring professionals in between.

A BIG first-day shout-out to our Educational Support Professionals who are especially near & dear to my heart. Because our schools really are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods & when we show up for the people who care for our kids, we’re showing up for one another & building the kind of community we all want to call home. ❤️🏫 Delaware State Education Association Red Clay Schools

Twenty years strong, Cajun Kate’s is one of those local gems that gives our community its flavor, personality, and sense of place. It reminds us why supporting local businesses in our own backyard matters so much. And as great as the food is, it’s the wonderful people behind Kate’s who are the heart of its success and a big part of why so many of us have loved this place for so long. ❤️

At the heart of public service is a value that means so much to me: human dignity, making sure every one of our loved ones, friends & neighbors is valued, respected, included & cared for.

Every visit with my friends at the Mary Campbell Center reminds me what that looks like in action, through the extraordinary staff who create a community where residents can live full lives surrounded by care, belonging & opportunity.

I’m grateful to have helped secure support for improvements that will strengthen that work for residents, their families & the dedicated professionals who care for them every day. Because how we care for one another, especially those who rely on us most,says so much about who we are as a community.

Through her decades-long career, Dolly Parton stood for many things that we all do our best to uphold today: strong sense of community, accessible education & an unwavering capacity for kindness. The ‘Birds’ mural we unveiled in Wilmington, just one day following Dolly's passing, is a symbol that reminds me of her legacy. This mural symbolizes unity, teamwork & the shared burdens we experience as one community.

It was an honor to partner with Wilmington City Councilman Spadola, Rep. Chukwuocha, Mayor Carney, Kathleen Patterson from the Ninth Ward & our amazing artist, Christian Kanienberg.

We all have differences, but we also share much more similarities than we realize. I hope that everyone who views this mural as they pass Concord Avenue remembers that fact & takes a moment to appreciate their neighbors and the place they call home.

Time with our parents, students & school professionals is always grounding because our schools truly are the heartbeat of our communities. Spending time on first day back in the Brandywine School District at Mount Pleasant High & Mt. Pleasant Elementary was a wonderful reminder of that.

Having served as an assistant superintendent/chief of staff at the district level, deputy secretary/chief of staff at the state level &, most importantly, being married to a public school educator, I know how much hope, hard work & possibility are wrapped into that first day of school.

It was such a joy to welcome everyone back, share some laughs & quality time with the students, families & incredible professionals who bring our schools to life each day. Moments like these reaffirm why I’m so humbled to serve as your state senator. I'm grateful to keep learning from the young people, families & educators who make our communities stronger. After a long day, there’s nothing better than dinner at a true Brandywine Hundred institution: V&M Bistro, where it really is all about family & we’re so lucky to feel like part of theirs.❤️

I’m very picky about my eggplant parm (long story) & V&M’s is the best I’ve had in ages, thin layers upon layers of fresh eggplant, ahhh, so, so good. And the IYKYK-famous Limoncello Ice Martini? We decided that counted as dessert. 🍋🍸

What a wonderful way to spend time with our Baynard Village neighbors, walking their blocks together, taking in the historic beauty of the neighborhood & seeing firsthand the pride, care & hard work they’ve poured into their homes, gardens, intersections & shared spaces. This is community pride at its finest: neighbors coming together not only to care for what they have today, but to imagine what their neighborhood can become tomorrow.

I’m proud to partner with them & help bring resources to their vision, because beautification, preservation & neighborhood improvements work best when they begin with the people who call the community home. The Baynard Civic Association has incredible leaders helping bring those voices together as this special work moves forward.

Bellefonte’s Summer Shop & Stroll was another great reminder of what makes this community so special. These aren’t just neighbors, they’re our friends & the relationships we’ve built here mean so much.

It was wonderful to spend time with local artists, support our small businesses, do a little shopping & just catch up with people we care about.

Late dinner at a Trolley Square institution reaffirmed something we already knew: some things really do just get better with time, & Kid Shelleen's is definitely one of them. The nachos are legendary, the IYKYK secret hot sauce ask is for insiders only, & the bartenders, as always, are the heart of what has made Kid’s a legend for generations.

We didn’t score the coveted lounge chairs last night, so naturally we’ll be stalking them on our next visit, but the bonus was running into our pal & Wilmington Councilwoman “Tish” Bracy. What’s your favorite Kid’s story, maybe a legendary snow-day adventure? Drop it in the comments. 🌮🔥🍻
