Vehicle Fire Upgraded to Structure Fire

This morning, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched for a reported vehicle fire. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire after reports indicated the vehicle was inside the building.

Due to conflicting reports from callers located on both the countryside and city sides of the area, both Baugo Township Fire Department and Elkhart City Fire Department dispatched a full response.

Prior to the arrival of fire crews, a Harrison Township firefighter who was working across the street noticed the fire and immediately deployed fire extinguishers, helping to slow the spread of the fire.

Baugo Medic 122, which was clearing another call at the time, arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire with extension into the building.

Elkhart City Engine 3 arrived and deployed an attack line into the structure. Ladder 191 arrived shortly after and assisted with ventilation. Engine 141, staffed by off-duty Baugo firefighters, responded and established nursing operations.

Thanks to the quick actions of the Harrison Township firefighter and the rapid response of both departments, the fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. With the fire quickly contained, Elkhart City was able to cancel additional responding resources, keeping them available for other emergencies. Baugo Township was also able to scale back its response.

All employees inside the building at the time of the fire were able to safely evacuate. No injuries were reported.

Smoke Investigation leads to discovery of Vehicle Fire.

This morning during shift change, Baugo Township Fire Department was 911 dispatched for a smoke investigation near Spruce Street and Driftwood Avenue.

The off-going crew quickly grabbed their gear back up and responded with Engine 141, while the on-duty crew responded with Ladder 191.

Upon arriving in the area, crews observed thick smoke coming from the woods. Crews repositioned and entered the wooded area to investigate. Crews located a vehicle fully involved. Engine 141 deployed an attack line while 191 brought in another hose pack. The many hands making quick work extinguished the vehicle fire without issue and ensured the area was safe.

The scene was subsequently turned over to law enforcement for further investigation to locate the owner.

During this incident, another member of the off going shift stayed behind in case there were any additional calls.

Vehicle Collision – SR 19 & US 20 Bypass

This afternoon, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched to the area of SR 19 and the US 20 Bypass for a multi-vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, crews identified two individuals who required evaluation as a result of the crash.

Due to the collision, southbound and northbound SR 19 as well as the Bypass off-ramp were temporarily closed while crews worked on scene. Firefighters also mitigated oil and other vehicle fluids released during the crash and cleared debris scattered across three lanes of travel.

Once the scene was stabilized and roadway hazards were addressed, the incident was turned over to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.

Please use caution when traveling through the area while the crash has been cleaned up. Remnants of oils may remain making the road slick in spots.

Update: The Tornado warning has been canceled for our area. Be careful of down trees and lines. DO NOT TOUCH OR GO NEAR DOWN POWERLINES. As the storm progresses we transition into a flash flood possibility. If you see water covering the road. Turn around don't drown.

A Tornado Warning is in effect for Baugo Township and surrounding areas . Due to the widespread straight line wind threat. These winds have been recorded at 100mph+. Now is the time to get off the roads and into shelter.

We had a great day today handing out backpacks and school supplies! Huge thank you to the Baugo community and local businesses that donated☺️. Your contributions are helping many kids get a great start to the new school year! We still have some backpacks and supplies left, come see us Monday August 10th at JoGio's in Hively Square 12:00 to 4:00!! We want to give our youth the best start we can!! ....thank you to these local business for your support. Baugo Township Fire Department Responds to Residential Structure Fire

This morning at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 56000 block of County Road 1.

Upon the arrival of Ladder 191, crews encountered a working fire with flames showing from the front of the home. Within 1 minute and 30 seconds of arriving on scene, firefighters had established an attack line and began flowing water on the fire. Simultaneously, a second crew advanced another hose line into the residence to stop the fire from extending into the remainder of the home.

Within five minutes of arrival, crews had successfully knocked down the fire in the front living room area. As mutual aid companies arrived, they assisted with vertical ventilation, overhaul, and relief of the initial interior crews.

Firefighters rescued one cat alive from the residence. This cat received oxygen and was monitored. Unfortunately, a second cat was found unresponsive and could not be revived.

One adult occupant sustained minor injuries after escaping the home through a window. She was evaluated by Wakarusa EMS and was released at the scene.

Thanks to the rapid and coordinated efforts of all responding personnel, the fire was quickly contained. Fire damage was limited primarily to the front living room, preventing significant extension to the remainder of the home.
