This morning Elma CERT & Tonawanda CERT participated together in an Orienteering class at Chestnut Ridge Park. Although we started in the rain, everyone had a great time in the woods. We are looking forward to training together more often in the near future.
Happy National Preparedness Month.

Members of Elma CERT, Inc. participated in this multiagency drill this morning in roles of victims and support personnel.
Members attended meetings and received security clearances in the weeks prior to the drill date.
Our members enjoyed their experience and we thank Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services for inviting us to participate.
WNY has lost an EMS pioneer and icon. LaSalle Ambulance, Mercy Flight of Western New York and Mercy EMS founder and President Mr. Doug Baker.
May he rest in eternal peace. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and the Emergency Services Community.
It is with unspeakable sadness that we must announce the passing of our beloved Founder and President Emeritus, Douglas Baker.
Mr. Baker will be remembered as courageous, charming, generous, quick-witted, and warm-hearted - but first and foremost, good. He was simply a good man that brought untold good to thousands upon thousands of people, not just here in Western New York, but across the globe.
We ask that you keep Mr. Baker’s family and his many, many friends in your thoughts and prayers as we all grieve the loss of a true pillar of our community.
Here’s another one.

As a public service, I offer an easy ID point that I learned in college. It’s amazing how many people don’t know how to identify poison ivy on their property and differentiate from other benign species.
Please see three leaves, central one is serrated or jagged. On both edges. Two adjacent leaves are smooth facing central leaf and serrated only on outer edge. That’s your dead giveaway.

Our neighboring non-profit Helicopter EMS provider based in Canandaigua, NY, Mercy Flight Central, is on location at our Buffalo Base to continue to deliver critical air ambulance service to the people of Western New York. Requests for air ambulance within our service area should continue to be directed to our Communications Center as normal. We are so grateful to have the full support of the Mercy Flight Central team during this difficult time, and we thank them and all who have expressed to us their well wishes and encouragement from the bottom of our hearts.
Elma Community Emergency Response Team, Inc. updated their phone number.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mercy Flight family and extended families during this tragic time.
It’s road construction season. Don’t be distracted while driving. These guys and girls want to go home everyday to their families.
A DOT blocker unit parked on the shoulder of Route 219 was destroyed after it was struck by an inattentive driver today. Following a number of workers struck in work zones, several highway departments have chosen to park trucks and trailers before work areas, to shield highway employees from oncoming traffic. This trailer did exactly what it was supposed to do, absorbing the hit without creating more danger. If you look closely, even the mud flaps behind the tires on the dump truck say "slow down, move over, it's the law!"
The accident, which took place in the southbound lanes between the I-90 and Milestrip Road, thankfully did not injure any highway workers. It's unclear if the driver of the striking vehicle received injuries or was charged.
