Hartman Arboretum

A place where people can be close to nature and enjoy a diversity of trees and shrubs.

Many of the trees and shrubs seen at the Hartman Arboretum are native to Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky, also know as the Shawnee Hills area. New plant varieties that are not common to this area can also be observed. We have a thriving wildlife garden that attracts thousands of butterflies. Late summer or early fall are the best times to see the butterflies in full array.

Looking forward to a few more events coming up here at the Arboretum in the next couple of months! You can be a part of our working team with our Volunteer Day and W**d Wrangle, where you can help us clean up our gardens and wooded areas. You can also learn about our tree collection at the Tree Identification Hike, then connect with us and some wonderful local partners at our Fall Open House. We can't wait for you to join us! 🌳💚

We had a great time welcoming students from Harrison High School for a field trip learning about the scientific method, native and invasive species, weathering, and more. It is so fun to see the Arboretum space being used for education in so many different ways 💚 Feel free to reach out if you or someone you know would be interested in a field trip here!

Seven different butterfly species spotted here today! How many can you name? The first is probably one of the easiest to recognize—a tiger swallowtail! 🦋💛

Another great Butterfly Day today here at the Arboretum! 🐛🦋🤩 We were thrilled to share the magic of butterflies with so many visitors today!

Thanks to so many volunteers who made today possible, including friends from Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners Association, Southwest Chapter Indiana Native Plant Society, and Indiana Master Naturalist, who brought materials, caterpillars, crafts, and so much knowledge and enthusiasm. Many thanks also to Eric Ridenour of Montessori Academy of Evansville for sharing his beautiful monarch float with us for the day!

We are so excited about Butterfly Day being just one week away!! 🤩 Join us, Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners Association and Southwest Chapter Indiana Native Plant Society on Saturday, August 15, 10am-1pm to celebrate butterflies!

We will have caterpillars and chrysalises for you to meet up close and personal, butterflies and blooms to explore in the gardens, and info and even a few plants to give away for you to start attracting butterflies in your own yard. Hope to see you next week! 🐛🦋
