Rod Gray of West Valley High School is Mayor Grier Hopkins' April Educator of the Month!
Mayor Hopkins was unable to present, so our Deputy Chief of Staff, Amy Gallaway stopped by her old stomping grounds to celebrate Rod. Here are what some nominators had to say about him:
🦺 "Rod Gray has made a profound and lasting impact on the West Valley High School community through his daily actions, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students and staff. Although his title is Safety Assistant, his influence extends far beyond that role. A 1996 West Valley graduate who returned to serve his school in 2003, Rod has positively impacted thousands of students over more than twenty years of service. In 2017, he was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award, an achievement voted on by the graduating class, which is an especially meaningful recognition that reflects the trust, respect, and appreciation students have for him."
🦺 "Rod Gray empowers progress by building deep, authentic relationships with students, staff, families, and the broader community. He is widely recognized for his ability to connect with all students, including those who are struggling, disengaged, or facing challenges. By meeting individuals where they are and focusing on their potential rather than their behavior, Rod fosters trust and growth that lead to positive outcomes for students."
🦺 "Rod Gray demonstrates a strong dedication to growth and innovation through his daily practice of leadership, adaptability, and continuous improvement in service to students and staff. He consistently goes beyond the expectations of his role by stepping into challenging situations with professionalism, insight, and care. Rod embraces the belief that leadership is action, not position, and models this by supporting students through difficult moments, engaging in meaningful conversations, and helping them mature both academically and personally. His ability to respond thoughtfully to diverse needs, maintain a positive yet firm approach, and offer valuable insight to colleagues reflects an ongoing commitment to improving school culture and student outcomes through intentional, growth-focused practices."
