This week, the library lost two long-time friends, Lourae Rumple and John Nave.

Many may remember John’s auto body shop on Henley Avenue or the many hours he spent walking around Fairmount. Simply put, he was part of the fabric of Fairmount for decades. His family has been active with the library and the book club for many years, and our thoughts and condolences go out to them.

On the morning of the 19th, we were informed of Lourae Rumple's passing. While she would have never accepted the title, she was the “artist in residence” of the Fairmount Public Library. One of the most popular programs at the library was “Painting with Lourae.” She was happy to work with those who wanted to develop their artistic skills or just have a creative outlet. Patrons would attend from throughout the region to learn and have fun. In addition, she painted the sign for our building and many of the sayings and quotes found throughout the library. Her heart made “Painting with Lourae” far more than an art class.

For those who have painted with Lourae over the years, the library will host a “Paint and Chat” event on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Details will be forthcoming; however, I ask her creative friends to hold the date and let others know that we will be honoring her that day with memories and an art project of your choice.
