🕊️ DOVE SEASON OPENS TODAY – COMMUNITY SAFETY REMINDER 🕊️

The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents that today, September 1, is the opening day of dove hunting season.

Throughout the day, you may hear increased gunfire in rural and agricultural areas as hunters participate in the season opener. The sound of gunfire alone does not necessarily indicate an emergency.

Please use good judgment when contacting emergency services.

Call 911 immediately if:
• You witness someone being shot, injured, or threatened with a firearm.
• You see someone intentionally shooting toward homes, occupied buildings, roadways, vehicles, or people.
• You believe there is an immediate threat to life or public safety.
• You observe suspicious or dangerous firearm activity where someone may be in imminent danger.

If you simply hear gunshots in an area where hunting commonly occurs and there are no indications of an immediate threat or emergency, please do not call 911 solely to report the sound of gunfire.

We also remind hunters to know their target and what is beyond it, follow all applicable hunting and firearm laws, respect private property, and always practice safe firearm handling.

The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone a safe and responsible hunting season.

Last week, the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office welcomed four new members to the agency: one Deputy Sheriff and three Reserve Deputies.

Sheriff Lee Orozco administered the oath of office to Deputy Ana Ochoa, who joins the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office after previously serving with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ochoa brings valuable prior law enforcement experience to our agency and already holds a Nevada Category III P.O.S.T. certificate. She will begin her service with the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office in the Detention Center.

Sheriff Orozco also swore in Reserve Deputies Stephen Skoda, Leif Steinbaugh, and Robert Bridges.

Reserve Deputies Skoda and Steinbaugh will participate in the agency’s reserve training program, where they will receive the knowledge and skills necessary to perform law enforcement duties and assist both the Operations Division and the Detention Center.

Reserve Deputy Bridges already holds a Nevada Category I P.O.S.T. certificate. After becoming familiar with the agency’s Standard Operating Procedures and completing required specialized training and certifications, he will be eligible to assist the Operations Division with designated functions.

Please join us in welcoming Deputy Ochoa and Reserve Deputies Skoda, Steinbaugh, and Bridges to the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to our Reno Police Department brothers and sisters. Sending thoughts and prayers to our brother and his family. RPD has been hit so hard in the last year…love to you all.
