This afternoon at 5:07pm (May 21st), our firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire located at the College Place Apartments on 21st Avenue. Crews arrived to a single story four unit apartment building with an exterior fire that had spread to the interior of the apartment. Firefighters began extinguishing the fire, but found it had also spread to the shared attic space for the building. Crews had to enter the adjoining apartment units to check for fire spread in the attic space. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to deem the incident under control.

The apartment where the fire started suffered severe fire, smoke and water damage, while adjoining apartments had varying damage from water, smoke and overhaul operations. Four occupants from the four units will be displaced due to the damage, they're receiving assistance from the Red Cross Cascades Region. No citizens or firefighters were injured during the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but started on the back deck of one of the apartments

Due to the age of the building, it was not equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system or fire walls in the attic. A modern constructed apartment building would have had these these fire safety features.

We received assisted on scene from Cornelius Fire Department - Oregon, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, Gaston Rural Fire District, Banks Fire District 13, AMR Washington County, Oregon, Forest Grove Police and Forest Grove Light & Power.

The Cocodona 250 is an ultramarathon that takes place in the near Flagstaff, Arizona. It covers 253 miles of extreme Arizona hiking trails with an overall elevation gain of 38,000ft. Around 400 participants tried it this year with 1/3 of them not finishing.

Why are we talking about this race in Arizona? Our very own C-Shift Firefighter/Paramedic Kaitie Sloan finished the race on Saturday. It’s bananas to think of racing 250 miles on foot, then add additional challenges like sleep deprivation and dehydration and we understand the true achievement of finishing this grueling race.

Exactly how far is 253 miles? Well if you left our fire station and walked to the community of Sunny Valley in southern Oregon (north of Grants Pass). And even then, that route takes you through mostly flat terrain.

We are extremely proud of Kaitie for finishing this race. She said she can’t wait for her next ultramarathon, but it’ll likely be something a little more tame.

This afternoon we responded to a serious medical incident that required the patient be transported to a nearby trauma hospital by Life Flight Network. This is our first time using the helicopter from the newly opened base at Hillsboro Airport, bringing a valuable air transport asset closer to our area.

The Life Flight helicopters are staffed with a paramedic and nurse with advanced critical care capabilities. One of those capabilities is being able to give blood to patients.

On this incident today we also worked with AMR Washington County, Oregon, Forest Grove Police and Washington County Sheriff's Office. We also want to thank the staff and students from Pacific University who assisted us while we landed the helicopter on the football field at Hanson Stadium.

Today we celebrate International Firefighters Day, a chance to recognize and honor current and former firefighters around the world that risk their lives make our communities a safer place.

It is also Star Wars Day. Coincidence? We think not.

For all firefighters out there, have a safe shift and May the Force Be With You.

Earlier this afternoon our firefighters were dispatched to a reported shed on fire on Bryce Avenue. While responding additional callers stated that the near by house was close to catching fire, at that point the incident was upgraded to a residential structure fire response.

Minutes later, our engine and rescue crews arrived with 5 firefighters and were able to quickly extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading into the house. The outside deck area and its contents were destroyed. Two windows on the house were cracked from the extreme heat.

The house also protected itself from burning, as its siding is made of Hardie Plank. A fiber cement siding that is fire resistant. If the siding was made of wood or vinyl, it would have easily burned and fire likely spread inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
