October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) 💜

Every October, YWCA Northeast Indiana stands with our community to raise awareness, spark conversations, and drive action to end domestic violence. This month, we’re sharing essential resources on how to recognize the warning signs, support survivors, and take steps toward prevention.

We hope that you know that your willingness to speak up and advocate for others is a great step! You do not have to have all the answers to advocate for a northeast Indiana without violence -- for a world without violence. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and dignified.

Your support and participation make a real difference. As a single organization, we cannot ensure safety for all alone—it takes a united community, working together, to create lasting change. Now more than ever, collaboration is essential as we strive for a future free from violence. We’re excited to conclude DVAM with our Circle Luncheon this Thursday. The most dangerous time in a domestic violence situation is when the victim is ready to leave. There are ways that we can support survivors in a safe way to ensure that they get out of the relationship and get connected to help. Here are 4 ways to safely support survivors:
1. Recognize the warning signs
2. Keep their story confidential to protect them and you
3. Give a survivor options, not ultimatums
4. Plan for safety if they are not ready to leave

"The prologue to my story actually came in the middle.

For years, my life followed a clear and predictable path until an unexpected turning point completely altered my trajectory. Facing an uncertain future, I needed space to reset, so I set out on a 238-mile trek on the Camino de Santiago.

Those 16 days on the trail reminded me that I can handle difficult things and that I am stronger than I realize. That journey served as the true prologue to where I am today: surrounded by family, good friends, purpose, and meaningful work.

Whenever life feels overwhelming or uncertain, I highly recommend taking a long walk."

YWCA Northeast Indiana will once again be participating in Write a Will Week. This is a community-wide initiative to promote the importance of having a will and encourage charitable giving in the form of a bequest. We are excited to welcome two attorneys from Barnes & Thornburg for thirty-minute appointments. They will prepare simple wills at no charge in exchange for including a gift to your favorite charity.
