Training for the unexpected so we’re ready when it matters most!! 🌊🚤

Members of the District 9 Swiftwater Rescue Team recently participated in a multi-agency operational readiness exercise designed to test teamwork, communication, navigation, and technical rescue skills in realistic flood rescue scenarios.

Teams from multiple departments including, the Germantown Fire Department, Collierville Fire Department, Shelby County Fire Department, Munford Fire Department, and Millington Fire Department, worked together through several challenging rescue scenarios across multiple locations using GPS coordinates to locate and respond to incidents.

Scenarios included:
🔹 Locating and rescuing a stranded victim while emphasizing communication and coordination.
🔹 Simulated flooded-home rescues where crews accessed “attic victims” by positioning boats at rooftops and cutting through roofs for patient extrication.
🔹 A low-angle rope rescue involving a patient packaged in a Stokes basket.

Each scenario required crews to navigate to different GPS locations, develop rescue plans, and safely execute operations under realistic conditions.

Exercises like these strengthen regional partnerships and ensure our responders are prepared to protect our communities during flooding and water rescue emergencies. Great work by everyone involved!!!

A special thank you to the Germantown Police Department for providing drone support and capturing photos of the exercise from above.

🚨 Flash Flood Warning in Effect Until 11:15 PM 🚨

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Flash Flood Warning for our area.

🌧️ What’s Happening:
At 8:15 PM, Doppler radar indicated heavy thunderstorms moving through the area.
• 1–2 inches of rain have already fallen
• Rainfall rates of 2–3 inches per hour are expected
• An additional 1–2.5 inches of rain is possible

⚠️ Flash flooding is already occurring or will begin shortly.

🚗 Turn Around, Don’t Drown:
Never drive through flooded roadways. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 12 inches can carry away a vehicle.
If you encounter water over the road—turn around, don’t drown.

⚠️ Stay Safe:
• Avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas
• Do not attempt to cross flooded roads
• Stay tuned for updates and have multiple ways to receive alerts

🚨 Severe Weather Alert – Stay Weather Aware as Another Round of Storms Moves In 🚨

There is an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe storms is in place today, especially this afternoon and evening.

🌩️ Main Threats:
• Damaging wind gusts
• Large hail
• A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out

⏰ Timing:
• Strong to severe storms could begin as early as 2:00 PM and last through 10:00 PM

🌧️ Rainfall & Flooding:
• Additional 1–3 inches of rain possible through Wednesday
• Widespread flooding is not expected due to dry conditions
• However, if storms linger it could lead to isolated flooding in some areas

🔍 What We Know:
• Conditions are favorable for severe storm development
• Primary threats remain wind and hail, with a secondary tornado risk

❓ What We Don’t Know:
• Storm structure is still uncertain
• A mix of messy storm clusters, bowing lines, and possible supercells may develop
• Any supercells that form could increase the tornado threat

⚠️ Safety Reminder:
Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, know where you’ll go if warnings are issued, and stay tuned throughout the day.

🚨 SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE🚨

There is an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe storms is in place for tomorrow (Monday), followed by a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) on Tuesday.

Here is the breakdown of what you need to know and how to prepare:

🌩️ Tomorrow (Monday) - Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5)

• Timing: Expect storms to impact the area during the evening to overnight hours.

• Hazards: A highly volatile environment means all severe hazards are possible, including tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

• Storm Evolution: Storms will likely start as isolated supercells. These initial storms will carry the highest tornado potential. As the night goes on, they are expected to merge into a powerful squall line.

• What We Are Still Watching: The exact arrival time. Current guidance points to the worst storms hitting after sunset, but this could shift. A few rogue supercells could also develop ahead of the main line, so it's crucial to stay weather-aware all evening.

⛈️ Tuesday - Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5)
• Risk Area: Areawide.
• Hazards: The primary threats for Tuesday will transition to damaging winds and large hail.

⚠️ Action Steps to Take NOW:

• Prepare for nighttime storms: Since the peak risk is after sunset, make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts that will wake you up (e.g., NOAA Weather Radio, phone alerts set to loud).

• Review your plan: Know exactly where your family's safe space is (a basement or interior, windowless room on the lowest floor).

• Stay updated: Forecasts can change. Keep checking back for the latest timing updates as we get closer to the event.
