Germantown Fire Department

We are an all-hazards combination municipal fire department dedicated to providing exceptional emergency and essential services to our customers.

The Germantown Fire Department consists of 92 paid personnel and approximately 25 reserve fire fighters serving from 4 fire stations, staffing 4 engine companies, 3 ambulances and 1 truck company daily. The department provides a wide-range of emergency and essential services including but not limited to fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials response, special operations rescue (confined space, trench, high-angle, water, swift water, and urban search and rescue), emergency management, and public fire safety education.

🇺🇸 Climbing to Remember. Climbing to Honor. 🇺🇸

Members of the Germantown Fire Department were proud to join hundreds of first responders from across the Mid-South for the inaugural 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis.

Firefighters from Shelby, Tipton, DeSoto and surrounding counties climbed the equivalent of 110 stories—the height of the World Trade Center towers—in honor of the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

Representing Germantown Fire were:

Each step was a reminder of the courage, sacrifice and brotherhood displayed on that day and in the years since.

The event also gave back to the fire service community, with all proceeds and donations benefiting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and its programs supporting the families and survivors of fallen firefighters.

We are proud of our firefighters for taking part in this meaningful tribute and helping ensure that the sacrifice of the 343 is never forgotten.

🚒 Welcome to the GFD Family, Bryce! 🚒

Help us give a big Germantown Fire welcome to Bryce Beeler, one of the newest members of our crew!

Bryce is 33 and is brand new to the fire service. Originally from Knoxville, he made his way to Memphis in 2011 to play baseball at the University of Memphis. ⚾️

Bryce says he’s always been interested in the fire service because he enjoys being part of a team and working alongside others toward a common goal. He believes God’s timing is always right, and he’s excited to start this new chapter with Germantown Fire.

When he’s not at the firehouse, Bryce enjoys spending time with his wife, Mariah, and their two kids, June and Jack. And when family life gives him a little free time, you might find him out playing a round of golf with friends.

When you think of the Germantown Fire Department, you may picture fire trucks responding with lights and sirens. But some of GFD’s most important work happens before an emergency ever occurs.

After completing an intensive week-long Fire Inspector certification course at the Alabama Fire College’s Huntsville Regional Training Center, 15-year GFD veteran Inspector/Firefighter Paramedic Joe Bagwell earned his state certification and is preparing to file for his state fire inspector license.

The training focused on fire and building codes, emergency plans and safety standards. These skills help identify potential hazards and make Germantown’s commercial and public buildings safer for residents, visitors and first responders.

Through specialized training and certifications, GFD continues to invest in prevention, preparedness and community risk reduction, helping keep emergencies from happening in the first place.

🚨 National Emergency Preparedness Month – Week 4: Prepared Together! 🚨

As we wrap up Week 4 of National Emergency Preparedness Month, remember: preparedness is a community effort! Being ready isn’t just about having supplies—it’s about making sure everyone knows what to do when an emergency happens.

Include the kids!
Emergency preparedness doesn’t have to be scary. Turn it into something fun! Try a preparedness scavenger hunt or use a Preparedness Bingo card to help kids learn important safety skills while building confidence.

🏘️ Look out for your neighbors!
Take a few minutes to connect with neighbors who may need extra help during an emergency, especially older adults or people with disabilities. Knowing ahead of time who may need assistance evacuating or getting to a safe place can make a big difference when every second counts.

❤️ A prepared community is a stronger community. Talk with your family, check on your neighbors, and make preparedness something we do together.

🚒🔥 Help us welcome Oliver Tomann to Germantown Fire!

Oliver’s journey to GFD started a little farther away than most! Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, he came to the United States in 2019 to pursue his career as a collegiate student-athlete.

After graduating, personal experiences sparked an interest in EMS and the fire service. Oliver spent the past year working in private EMS, gaining valuable experience and discovering a passion for helping others.

When it came time to take the next step, Oliver chose Germantown Fire after learning about our department’s modern and innovative approach to patient care and our focus on improving outcomes for the people we serve.

Outside of work, Oliver enjoys exercising and spending time with his wife.

🚨 It’s Week 3 of Preparedness Month! This week, our core message is LOCAL PREPAREDNESS. Disasters don't happen everywhere at once, so we need to know and prepare for the specific hazards right here in Germantown.

A common local risk we face is severe weather, including tornadoes and flash flooding. Check out our "Myth vs. Fact" graphic below to bust a dangerous misconception about tornado safety.

🛑 MYTH: Open windows to equalize pressure during a tornado.
✅ FACT: Keep them CLOSED. Extreme wind and debris damage structures, not pressure differences. Opened windows can weaken your home's integrity!

Your Week 3 Checklist:
🏠 1. Specific Local Hazards:

Remember: "Turn Around, Don't Drown!" for flash flooding on roadways.

Make sure you understand the difference between local warnings (e.g., sirens vs. phone alerts) in Germantown.

🔑 2. Home Protection Actions:

Check: Test all your smoke detectors.

Learn: Show everyone how to shut off the main gas and water valves in an emergency.

Review: Go over your insurance policies to understand what risks (like flood or tornado damage) are covered. Standard policies often require additional coverage!

Stay informed and protect your sanctuary.

On September 9, Germantown Fire Department crews responded to a large structure fire off Poplar Pike, where intense flames and heavy smoke threatened nearby homes. The homeowners escaped safely, and mutual aid crews from Collierville Fire & Rescue and Bartlett Fire Department assisted GFD on scene.

Two GFD firefighters were injured and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Both are in good condition and expected to make a full recovery.

As we approach the fall time change, Chief Eric Grizzard reminds residents to take a few minutes to:

🔔 Replace smoke alarm batteries
🔔 Test your smoke alarms
🏠 Review and practice your home escape plan

🇺🇸 We Remember. We Honor. We Will Never Forget.

Today, as we remember September 11, 2001, we are incredibly grateful to be part of a community that continues to recognize the significance of that day and honor the sacrifices made 25 years ago.

Throughout the day, members of the Germantown Fire Department had the privilege of joining our community and fellow first responders in several meaningful 9/11 remembrance events.

🇺🇸 This morning, the Foxes at Forest Hill Elementary invited our firefighters to join them for their 9/11 Stair Climb, honoring the first responders who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center to help others.

🇺🇸 Our Honor Guard participated in the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Memphis Fire Museum, paying tribute to the 343 FDNY firefighters and all those who lost their lives that day.

🇺🇸 Houston High School welcomed local first responders for a special 9/11 First Responders Luncheon, showing their appreciation for those who continue to serve our communities today.

Twenty-five years later, the promise remains the same: We will never forget.

Thank you to our schools, community members, and everyone who continues to teach the next generation about the courage, service, sacrifice, and unity shown on September 11, 2001.

Last week, members of the Germantown Fire Department joined regional first responders for intensive swiftwater rescue training at the Sardis Lake spillway dam.

From navigating rushing currents and rescue boats to conducting night operations and moving patients to shore, firefighters put critical skills to the tedt in real-world conditions.

Germantown serves as the host agency for the District 9 Swiftwater Rescue Team, a TEMA-accredited, multi-agency team serving West Tennessee alongside Collierville Fire & Rescue and the City of Millington Fire Department.

Training like this keeps our responders ready for whatever the call may bring.
