News Navigators equips participants with the skills to understand, evaluate, and responsibly engage with news and information in a complex media environment. Through an emphasis on local journalism, civic responsibility, and media literacy, participants learn how news is created, how to identify bias and misinformation, and why credible local news is foundational to healthy communities and democracy.

Session 6 of Civic Circle focused on Quality of Place. Adam Thies, Principal-Urban Development Strategies, with RATIO Design led a discussion of what makes a place special to you and how to encourage others to love what you love.

Jim Walker, Co-leader of Big Car Collaborative in Indianapolis, discussed the company’s projects including the new Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis (or CAMi) and SPARK on the Circle that has been in place since 2015. In placemaking, Jim encouraged to make places that are safe, inviting, accessible, comfortable and has choices for activities.

Youth-Granting, Investing, Volunteering and Engaging in Hancock County
Creating a culture of philanthropy starts by encouraging our youth to give and serve their community. Y-GIVE seeks to do just that by establishing a board of youth ambassadors for the Community Foundation with representation from each Hancock County public high school.

Beginning Sept. 28, the Community Foundation of Hancock County will accept applications for the Martha Beckenholdt Youth Philanthropy Award. Named for longtime philanthropist Martha Beckenholdt, the award honors a Hancock County high school junior for outstanding community service and philanthropy. The recipient will direct a $1,000 Community Foundation donation to a Hancock County nonprofit of their choice.

Applicants must be Hancock County high school juniors with a recommendation from a high school staff member or nonprofit organization leader located in Hancock County. Applications must be complete and submitted online by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30.

Please encourage young volunteers who may be eligible to apply!
