With area schools starting, the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists that you MUST STOP when a school bus is stopped, stop signal arm extended, and the flashing red signals are turned on. Failure to do so is not only illegal but it also puts our youth in danger. The fine for this violation is $500.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office participated in the "Speeding Prevention" Enforcement from July 27th through August 9th. During that time Deputies spent extra time patrolling the highways, streets, and county roads in Cedar County in an attempt to keep our communities and roadways safe as speeding is often a factor in crashes.
During the "Speeding Prevention" timeframe, Cedar County Deputies issued 19 citations for speeding violations.
Some of the other violations Deputies encountered are:

Careless driving citation: 1
Speeding warning: 40

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the upcoming Speeding Prevention enforcement. This enforcement will take place July 27th through August 9th 2026. During this enforcement period, Deputies will increase patrol on the roadways in Cedar County with a focus on speeding violations. The Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office data revealed that over the last two years 117 traffic fatalities were speed related. Please do your part to reduce this number by obeying the speed limits.

On June 24, 2026, at approximately 1433 hours, Yankton County inmate Ruperto Aguirre, DOB 1/22/1995, was being discharged from Avera Sacred Heart Hospital when he fled from a Yankton County transporter.

It is believed that Aguirre stole a boat along the Missouri River and traveled to the Nebraska shoreline where he was apprehended a short time later at approximately 1511 hours by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks officers. At no time was the public in any danger during his apprehension.

Aguirre is an active inmate who was originally charged with unauthorized manufacture, distribution, counterfeiting or possession of a schedule IV substance as a felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, unauthorized ingestion of a controlled drug or substance, and unauthorized articles in jail. He also is on a no bond Parole hold.

Thank you to the following responding agencies: Yankton Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska State Patrol, Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Yankton County Emergency Management, Yankton County EMS, and the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office.

This morning Chief Deputy Claussen presented plaques to Sheriff Koranda, Dispatcher/Jailer Jan Jansen, and Emergency Manager/911 Coordinator Kevin Garvin in honor and appreciation of their 30 years of dedicated service to the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office. Thirty years is more than a career. It’s a lifetime of commitment, sacrifice, and service to something greater than oneself. Thank you!

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office participated in the "Make it Click" Enforcement from May 15th through May 31st. During that time Deputies spent extra time patrolling the highways, streets, and county roads in Cedar County in an attempt to keep our communities and roadways safe.

During the "Make it Click" timeframe, Cedar County Deputies issued 31 citations for speeding violations out of 78 total contacts.
Some of the other violations Deputies encountered are:
Arrest for Driving During Suspension: 1
Citation for No Operator’s License: 1
Speeding Warning: 35
No Insurance Warning: 2
Wrong Way in a One Way Warning: 1
Handheld Wireless Device Warning: 1
Child Restraint Warning: 2
Vehicle Lighting Defect: 4

A visual survey was completed during this period and 84% were wearing their seat belts, compared to 78% during the "pre-enforcement" period a week prior to the event. We would like to see this number closer to 100%. Please do your part to increase the use of seat belts!

Deputies will continue looking for these violations in an attempt to make our roadways safer for everyone.
