As we remember Dolly Parton, we celebrate not only her remarkable career, but also her extraordinary dedication to children and literacy. Through her Imagination Library, Dolly helped make the joy of reading a part of childhood for millions of children around the world.
Founded in 1995 in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee, the program began with a simple dream: to give every child the opportunity to have books of their very own. What started locally quickly grew into a worldwide gift of literacy. Today, the Imagination Library has sent millions of free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, regardless of their family’s income.
Dolly received countless honors throughout her life, but her work helping children discover the magic of books was especially close to her heart. In 2023, the American Library Association honored her with lifetime membership, recognizing her lasting impact on literacy and her dedication to inspiring children to become lifelong readers.
Dolly Parton leaves behind a legacy measured not only in songs and awards, but in the millions of little hands that have turned the pages of a book because of her. Her greatest gift may be the love of reading she helped place in the hearts of generations of children. 📖✨
