It’s always a special day when we can welcome a local author to the library, and to pair that with kittens and crafts? Spectacular! ✨🐱💕📖

Local Hercules author Emerald Alexandrea joined us at a pop up “cat cafe” for teens this past Saturday to celebrate the launch of her new, Junior Library Guild Gold Standard debut novel, “The Music of Us”. Attendees DIYed sprayed edges on books, played with the cutest kitten from Contra Costa Animal Services, and left with their own signed copies of Emerald’s book.

The kitten, little baby Jane, is just nine weeks old and two pounds. She and her sisters are up for adoption at the Martinez Contra Costa Animal Services location.

Hercules Library will be closed Friday, June 19th for the Juneteenth holiday.

Hercules Library will reopen again for our normal hours on Saturday, June 20th.

As a reminder, Contra Costa Library is fine free, so there's no need to worry about getting items back to the Library on the day we are closed. We encourage you to enjoy your books for an extra day or so and return them when we reopen again.

Happy Juneteenth from your Hercules Library and City of Hercules

This morning, we gathered at city hall for a community flag raising ceremony & line dancing. We enjoyed a themed Storytime with Mayor Chris Kelley and Council Member Tiffany Grimsley, and learned about our history with the Walking Ghosts of Black History. Finally, we had the privilege of attending an interactive workshop on quilting in the African American community, shown through quilted tapestry made by the talented Khristel Johnson.

It was a day full of storytelling, music, culture and community celebration honoring the legacy of Juneteenth. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

The library will be closed this Friday, June 19th as we celebrate the national holiday, Juneteenth, freedom day.

Video description: a library patron uses the self-checkout machine to borrow a large stack of books. Text reads “don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t borrow 2 more library books. Those 7 more books will be the best 18 books you’ve ever borrowed. Treat yourself”

Happy Pride! Thank you to our friends from the Oakland Gay Men's Chorus for the delightful Pride kick off concert Saturday at Hercules Library. We were treated to tunes such as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and the classic "It's Raining Men", with lots of joy and positivity and groove in between. The perfect start to a month of celebrating! 🎤🌈

Next Saturday, June 13th, the Hercules holds our Juneteenth celebration! One of the programs is one you've been asking for since we shared her art during Black History Month: we're bringing back Khristel Johnson and her larger than life quilts.

At 1pm in the library, Khristel will share the story of Juneteenth through quilted tapestries, including 6 of her California Series. This series explores the Black Experience in California following the Emancipation Proclamation of 1865, and the Great Migration to California and the challenges Black Americans faced under Jim Crow. It is a visual history of Black folks in California, told through some of the most exquisitely rich quilts you have seen. LIke the one pictured here.

We look forward to seeing you for this Juneteenth journey.
