Today was our second ever Homeschool Science Fair at Hercules Library! From local Bay Area birds and earthquakes to what plants need to grow and the efficacy of natural preservation methods, each young scientist did a fabulous job researching, testing, and presenting on their chosen topics. We learned so much, and are so proud of these young learners for presenting their work in front of the whole group!

Breaking news: this morning's storytime special guest was your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! 📰🕷️📸 On a short break from fighting crime, he read a fun story about his exploits and held a hero bootcamp for the little ones. What a special treat it is to meet our heroes!

When life imitates art 👯‍♀️

Mrs. Alison & Ms. Lydia just so happened to wear the exact same dress today, and couldn't stop giggling about it. We had to give them the perfect book and snap a picture to share the serendipitous .

We had the pleasure of welcoming Diablo Taiko to Hercules Library this past weekend for an afternoon of drumming, honoring those from the past by carrying forth cultural traditions for future generations. What a beautiful and meaningful way to begin AANHPI (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) Heritage Month for our community.

If you missed it, Diablo Taiko will also be visiting our sister libraries soon:

Tuesday at the Hercules Library Homeschool Resource Center we saw young writer/directors in action! With the help of our book-making friend, LaVera Wilson, we wrote the stories, constructed the theatres, and created our own moving pictures at our Crankie Fest! These hand-made, hand-cranked contraptions were designed with cereal boxes, glue, dowels, and lots of love and creativity, and we had so much fun creating together!

Diablo Taiko is a community taiko ensemble located in Concord at the Diablo Japanese American Religious & Cultural Center. Their mission is to honor those from the past by carrying forth cultural traditions for future generations.

Taiko existed in ancient Japan over 2,000 years ago and was spread through Buddhism from China and Korea. The sound has been likened to a heartbeat and was used during healing ceremonies and sanctifying purposes as well as at festivals to enact deities with its deep rumbling sound.

In the early 20th century it was brought to the U.S. by Japanese immigrants to be used at Buddhist Temples as the sacred "Miya drum". Its rhythmic beat is played during Obon-odori festivals as all dance lively folk dances together and honor those who've passed before us.
