The side by side was looking too clean last week. Lt. Moe led Tuesday night’s training exercise, sending crews out on a mission to locate Rescue Randy after he managed to “accidentally” tumble into a ravine yet again. Between navigating rough terrain and coordinating different patient access points, the team got some great reps in for off-road driver training.

One of the biggest advantages of having a stokes basket mounted on the Argo is the ability to bring patient care into places our larger rigs can’t easily reach. Whether it’s beaches, trails, ravines, or muddy backcountry terrain, this setup helps us get patients out safely and efficiently.

After the exercise, Rescue Randy was thoroughly scrubbed and clean and is now patiently awaiting his next unfortunate life decision.

Last Tuesday we officially placed our custom brush truck into service for beach response. This side-by-side is fully road-ready, equipped with lights and sirens to quickly reach incidents in hard-to-access areas.

As warmer weather approaches (fingers crossed), please remember: fully extinguish campfires before leaving (not the time to leave it for the next person), and do not burn large driftwood.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at approximately 11:40AM, Homer Volunteer Fire Department responded to the 5300 block of Kachemak Drive for a report of a boat and single-family residential structure fire. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 20-foot Boston Whaler boat fully involved with fire and spreading to nearby dry ground vegetation and the residence. Tanker 28, Medic 21, C1, and off duty HVFD staff and volunteers responded. Ladder 1 from Kachemak Emergency Services responded auto aid with four personnel, Alaska State Forestry responded to manage the grass fire concern, and Homer Police Department assisted with traffic control. The fire was quickly extinguished. There was no extension into the home, no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

HVFD would like to thank everyone for their patience with traffic and responder safety.

This is the second fire response for the day for HVFD. The first was at approximately 6:01AM at the 200 block of Cityview Avenue where a small fire was quickly extinguished on a wooden deck outside of a multi-family dwelling complex. These two fires are not connected. No injuries were reported and that fire is also under investigation.

The past week has weighed heavily on the heart of Homer with the passing of Elaine Grabowski on December 29. Elaine’s contributions to the Homer Volunteer Fire Department were vast, and no single post could ever capture even a fraction of what she meant to our department or our community.

Forty-four years ago, on December 29, 1981, Elaine walked through the front doors of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and filled out an application. For over 40 years, Elaine devoted her life to public safety and to serving the community of Homer, leaving a legacy that will be felt for generations.

“Elaine was the face of the fire department, whether meeting the public or prospective volunteer at the front desk. She made everyone feel welcome. She played a huge role in creating a feeling of family among members of the department while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism. She literally touched so many lives.” – Robert Purcell, Former Fire Chief

Elaine responded to more calls than any other member in the history of the department, aiding thousands of members of the public throughout her remarkable service. Her dedication left a lasting impact on both the community and her colleagues. Here is the link for her retirement piece written when she retired in 2016.
