🚨❄️ Stay Safe & Warm, Terrebonne Parish! ❄️🚨
As cold weather approaches, Grand Caillou Vol. Fire Department wants to ensure everyone stays safe and avoids preventable fire hazards! The winter months are often the busiest for home fires, but a few simple precautions can make a big difference.
Please share these critical safety tips with your family and friends:
🔥 Fire Prevention & Heating Safety
Space Heaters: Plug them directly into a wall outlet—NEVER use extension cords or power strips, as they can overheat and cause a fire. Keep anything that can burn (curtains, blankets, furniture) at least three to five feet away from the heater. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed.
Generators: Always operate generators outdoors and at least 20 feet away from any doors, windows, or vents to prevent deadly carbon monoxide from entering your home.
Alternative Heating: Never use your oven or stove to heat your home. If using a fireplace, use a metal or glass screen to catch sparks, and have your chimney inspected annually.
Smoke & CO Alarms: Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a house fire by more than 60%. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly to ensure they are working properly!
🥶 Cold Weather & Home Safety
Protect the "Four Ps": People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants. Bring pets indoors, dress in layers if going outside, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors.
Prevent Frozen Pipes: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing.
Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit ready with essentials like food, water, and flashlights in case of power outages.
Stay warm, stay safe, and look out for one another! In an emergency, always call 9-1-1.
