PolitiFact
Fact-checking a claim about immigrants and California’s 'extra' House seats

Department Chair and Professor of Sociology Amanda Baumle recently shared her insights with PolitiFact in the article "Fact-checking a claim about immigrants and California’s 'extra' House seats." Dr. Baumle, a demography expert, says the claim of six appears to be based on apportionment analyses based on only U.S. citizens being counted, and not lawful permanent residents or other non-citizens with legal status. Immigrants without legal status, she estimates, account for three California seats..

Learning Abroad: Sociology of Armenia Through the Wine Industry and Foodie Culture (3 SCH)

Have you ever wanted to have an adventure while learning sociology? Do you long to step outside of the classroom in order to learn? How about traveling to a place where few have ever traveled, yet, offers so much in advancing your sociological imagination and perspective?

This coming May 2020 Summer Mini-mester, join Dr. Stella Grigorian as she takes a group of students literally halfway across the world to the land of pomegranates, apricots, vineyards at the foot of biblical Mt. Ararat to study Armenia through a uniquely sociological lens. By focusing the sociological lens on the wine industry and foodie culture, this learning abroad course will be an opportunity to experience and learn about the social-cultural changes that have taken place in Armenia during the last few decades as it has emerged from a Soviet state to an independence republic. Along with visits to the university and other organizations, the course will visit wineries, vineyards and new foodie establishments where students will have the chance to meet both locals and others from abroad who are helping to forge new ideas of work, professionalism and national identity and redefining Armenia’s role in the global arena through wine and tourism. The cost of the Learning Abroad course is being finalized but should be anywhere from $2800 to $3400. The cost will include round-trip airfare, lodging, transfers and transportation, most meals and required excursions. Students will leave Houston on May 11 and return to Houston on May 29, 2020. In the meantime, please feel free to contact Dr. Stella Grigorian ([email protected]) if you have any interest or questions.

Let’s travel and learn together!!!
