In Westchase District, amidst a diverse culinary scene, stands Kasra Persian Grill – a family legacy spanning five generations. Known for its authentic Persian cuisine, this restaurant was recently honored as one of only four Houston-area restaurants to make the Texas Monthly collection known as “The Good Place.”

For anyone who has eaten at Kasra, this will come as no surprise. Their food, from their famous beef kabobs to their chicken barg has received recognition and awards. What is perhaps lesser known is the history of how Kasra came to be a 24-year staple in Westchase District.

Stop by Lux Nail Spa at Woodlake Square almost any day of the week and you’ll find Antoine Hai Pham and wife Amy Vi Tran working at their appropriately-named Lux Nail Spa. Lux was an original tenant at Woodlake Square after the entire center, including its anchor Randalls store, was demolished and rebuilt in 2011. “I have a background in real estate and Amy always had a dream of owning a salon,” said Antoine. “It took us a while to find the right location, but we’ve been very happy here.”

With financial investments from Amy’s family, the salon opened in its original location in an 1800-square-foot space with 12 pedicure chairs and 4 children’s size chairs. The children’s spa chairs were later replaced with regular pedicure chairs, but the Phams had more demand than they had chairs.

After Jos. A. Bank vacated the 5,000-square-foot endcap at Woodlake Square, Antoine made three separate appeals to his landlord to move to the much larger space. On the third time, they said yes. Now Antoine and Amy have 44 pedicure chairs, two rooms dedicated to facials and a room for lash services. The pedicure chairs are divided throughout a main room and four rooms can be booked for private parties.

As large in-person gatherings continue to return, Westchase District has emerged as a hub for a wide array of conventions, conferences and expos. The Marriott Westchase and the Hilton Houston Westchase have played a pivotal role in accommodating the influx of these events in the District, reflecting a promising upturn for the events industry.

The resurgence in these events aligns with a broader trend of recovery in the industry. Data from Northstar Meetings Group indicates that participant numbers for 2024 will match or exceed the pre-pandemic figures of 2019.

Concrete has been poured for the trail that will connect Camden Park to HCC Campus Trail via a mid-block crossing. The mid-block crossing is already visible on Wilcrest and will feature a pedestrian-activated signal, which will allow pedestrians to safely cross the street.

While onsite parking is limited at Camden Park, Westchase District has negotiated additional parking at the office buildings located immediately across Wilcrest. Surface parking lots at 3000 Wilcrest, 3100 Wilcrest and 3200 Wilcrest will be available, thanks to agreements with the owners of those office buildings.

The crossing has also been enhanced by landscaping and colorful bollards, similar to those installed on the Elmside/Woodchase Path near Sneed Elementary School. This will offer further safety protection to pedestrians crossing the street to access Camden Park or to connect to the Library Loop Trail and the HCC Campus Trail.

Congratulations to the Houston Parks Board for its completion of a 5.1-mile greenway trail along Brays Bayou in West Houston. The project connects three Harris County Precinct 4 Parks (Art Storey Park, Mike Driscoll Park and Archbishop Fiorenza Park) for walkers and cyclists to enjoy. It also connects to Westchase District’s existing trail network, allowing trail users to connect to our Library Loop Trail and (soon to come) Camden Park.

The new greenway features interpretive and directional signage, as well as benches, trash cans and recycling containers. The project was funded by Harris County Precinct 3 and Precinct 4, with a significant contribution from the Kinder Foundation.

Special guests at the recent ribbon cutting included Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, Harris County Precinct 1 Commission Rodney Ellis, State Representative Hubert Vo and representatives from the offices of City Council Member Tiffany Thomas and Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones.

Westchase District is launching a camera technology pilot program aimed at enhancing public safety. Following a comprehensive public safety study involving stakeholders and Houston Police Department officials, the District has installed eight high-tech, point/tilt/zoom Axis cameras equipped with analytic technology.

The cameras, strategically placed based on the study's findings and high concentration areas, complement existing ones at Woodchase Park, look for things like loitering, running, large groups, or movement during hours that a park is closed. Surveillance alerts are directed to Zaladium, a 24/7 monitoring group, with SEAL dispatch promptly notified if necessary.

The combination of proactive measures, including SEAL Security and Flock camera technology, has contributed to a significant decline in crime rates within Westchase District. Comparing Jan-Oct 2022 vs. 2023, there's a 17.9% decrease in violent crimes and a 19.1% reduction in non-violent crimes.

Westchase District's Board of Directors is open to expanding the camera network based on the pilot program's results, guiding future implementations.

12/02/2023

A complete rebuild of Meadowglen Lane is the last of the projects that were approved by the City that will be completed under the Westchase District’s original 380 agreement.

The rebuilt roadway will have one travel lane in each direction and three lanes at the intersections (Rogerdale, Walnut Bend, Wilcrest, Hayes and Woodland Park) to accommodate turning movements. A new traffic signal will be added at Hayes and all the existing signals will be upgraded. There will be no on-street parking on Meadowglen and the bike lanes will be separated from the driving lanes and the sidewalks by a physical buffer. The design of this project is 60-percent complete and construction is expected to start in the fall of 2024.

Westchase District is bidding farewell to its original monument signs and replacing them with new ones designed to mark the District’s boundaries and beautify the area with a more modern look.

The project is underway, beginning with two signs along Beltway 8 and Westheimer. The first sign, located on the southbound side, has already been installed, and the second, on the northbound side at the Westheimer intersection, is being installed now.

NEC, the company responsible for Westchase District’s custom bus shelters, is also handling the fabrication and installation of these modern markers. A secondary contractor will follow NEC's installation to facilitate electrical work, allowing the signs to be illuminated at night.

Looking ahead to 2024, Westchase District will install a total of 20 markers across key locations like Wespark Dr., Richmond Ave., Meadowglen, and Briar Forest Dr.
