Excited to share that Cornerstone Community - home to New Hope Housing Reed and Star of Hope’s Women & Family Development Center - received an international award: Urban Land Institute’s Award for Excellence: The Americas.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious international award, together with Star of Hope” shared Joy Horak-Brown, President and CEO of New Hope Housing. “Cornerstone Community shows that two independent non-profit organizations collaborating can boldly tackle the problems faced by homeless and at-risk families, aiming to break the cycle of generational poverty.”

A big thank-you to all who were involved in the development of the Cornerstone Community – including its designers, GSMA, Inc. and Kirksey | Architecture. And especially to Star of Hope Mission for inviting us to be a part of this very special community.

New Hope Housing ended in-person activities in March of 2020 and immediately shifted to outreach education and awareness on the COVID-19 virus.

This month we are excited to safely open programming back up to serve residents who call New Hope home. Coffee and Conversation is one of the most fulfilling groups that staff have developed. Once a month in each NHH community we gather to explore a different topic, from family relationships, to hurricane safety, to new resources. Just the first in the many supportive services we will be offering!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. A mental illness is a condition that affects our thinking, feeling or mood. Such conditions may affect our ability to relate to others and function each day. All of us experience mental health issues from time to time, but we should be aware if we are unable to cope, and then seek treatment. You can get more information from National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Brazos Valley.

We are honored that The Rice Design Alliance invited us to show our Harrisburg property as one of the five locations in its annual architecture tour this year! While it will be virtual, the June 5 tour will be a great opportunity for the community to see single-family and this year, multifamily homes in Houston. Maria Nicanor, executive director of The Rice Design Alliance, and her crew came to our corporate office to interview Joy Horak-Brown, our president and CEO; and Stephanie Pedigo, Principal at GSMA, Inc., before touring Harrisburg. Stay tuned for ticket information. "See" you there!

We are excited! A television crew came to Houston yesterday for a national educational series, this segment being on "Affordable Housing." They interviewed Joy Horak-Brown, our president and CEO; Mayor Sylvester Turner; and a resident and her young family. They then went to NHH Harrisburg to see what our residents often do: get together with other residents for a game and friendship. The program truly will show how we are a leader in affordable housing. Stay tuned...

What a great time this past Sunday at Barrio Dogs' "Pedal for Paws" bike tour of the East End! As the pandemic has seen increasing economic hardship in the communities Barrio Dogs serves, the organization has seen even more of a need for assistance to help two- and four-legged neighbors in this time of extreme need. This 10-mile bike tour of Houston's East End gave us a unique perspective of the area's historic and culturally-rich neighborhoods, with artistic, beautiful murals . We always are happy to support our friend Gloria Medina Zenteno, and Barrio Dogs president.

How much fun is this! Residents at our newest property, NHH Dale Carnegie, recently were treated to a socially distanced ice cream social! In addition to dancing to music and enjoying a tasty treat, it was a great opportunity to meet new neighbors and engage with onsite case managers. Watch for more education, wellness and community events to come as residents and staff receive their vaccines!

New plan aims to cultivate 'cultural landscape' of the East End

We are so happy to see the Historical Cultural Plan by the East End District as it launches its strategy to showcase its culture and preserve its legacy in Houston's oldest neighborhood. With our corporate office and many properties in the East End, we are proud to be a part of such a cultural and historical part of the city. In fact, the murals at our property, Brays Crossing, add to the cultural heritage, of which we are all so proud.

Protect the East End's history at all costs.
