This episode of Public Historians at Work features Aracely Lara, a first-gen Mexican American graduate student in public history at UH, who discusses engagement with the 100 Years of Stories 'Agents of Change' exhibit on display at MD Anderson Library.

In the practice of public history, how the wider community receives a project is just as important as the intentions behind its creation. As work done for and with public audiences, the exhibits, media, and spaces we cultivate form a dialogue wher...

Listen to 'Celebrating a University: 100 Years of Stories,' the latest episode of Public Historians at Work! An elderly man in a boat and towing another boat somewhere in Houston circa 1915. It looks like he's holding on to a rope so perhaps it's a trotline. I look at him and think that even though he's probably not a rich man, perhaps, and doesn't have a lot of things that other folks have, he's got his little boat and is responding to the same primeval urge to get out onto the water that has spoken to men for eons. My guess is the other boat has fishing gear in it. This photo was taken by noted Houston photographer Harry Walker.

'Tehuana de Fiesta' (1937) by photographer Luis Márquez in Oaxaca, Mexico is part of a collection preserved at UH Special Collections and being shown in an exhibition, 'Mexichrome. Photography and color in Mexico,' at Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes starting today: https://museopalaciodebellasartes.inba.gob.mx/exhibition/mexichrome-fotografia-y-color-en-mexico/

A digital collection of the Márquez photos is available at https://digitalcollections.lib.uh.edu/collections/hh63sw725 The historic, hand-tinted color photos depict the people and culture of Mexico in the 1930s. Subjects include musicians and dancers in traditional dress, vendors displaying their wares, and people posing in colorful settings. Márquez signed each of the 27 prints in the collection.

The photos reside in a leather album, embossed with the date '8-10-1937' and the name 'Mrs. S. U. Allred.' The album and its contents were given as a gift to Mrs. Allred after she and Texas Governor James V. Allred visited Mexico in 1937.
