Woodson Research Center hosted the library staff again last week to work with their small printing presses. We made some mini posters with the letterpresses! Librarians do enjoy a good pun. Remember, sessions on book arts are hosted throughout the semester, so make sure you’re paying attention to our website and Athena Press so you can attend!

🎬No, really, we’re busy even in the summer when it’s lonely (somehow. We genuinely had only had like 5 minutes to get this footage of a librarian.😵‍💫

Have you been to a book arts workshop at the Woodson Research Center? While this one on Suminagashi, or Japanese paper marbling, was for library staff (it’s summer and we need fun too), anyone from Rice can join one of the regular sessions during the academic year. Just keep an eye out for announcements on our webpage and on the .press.htx account. Meanwhile, please enjoy the clips of first making ink designs, then transferring them to paper (second ghost print bonus) and seeing some of the results. Thanks for posing, Ian!

🎬🏺With the new film ‘The Odyssey’ opening today, let’s look at Alexander Pope’s famous translation of Homer from the Woodson Research Center rare book collections. Published in 11 volumes between 1715-1726, Pope’s translation of “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” was a major literary event of the first half of the 18th century and influenced future translations. On the title page of the first volume of “The Odyssey,” a past reader of the book has signed her name.

🦉☀️Ollie has been busy this summer! He recently attended the Annual Conference in Chicago. He found a lot of Ollie-sized spaces made just for him (????) and met up with where evidently he earned his MLIS. Interested in more Ollie adventures? Let us know! Librarians from Fondy frequently attend and present at meetings and conferences all over the world.

🎆This photo is from the 1990 Economic Summit, or the 16th G7 Summit, held in Houston, July 9-11. Fireworks are lighting up the night sky over Lovett Hall and the academic quad. Willy’s statue is visible in the lower center, and city buildings can be seen in the distance. 🦉🎇

✈️Ollie and the UX office were recently back in the 🇬🇧UK to present at a conference in York. He then got to travel to Edinburgh to see the castle and a few local sights. Come ask the UX team about their trip when you get a chance! 🦉
