A Note from Jerry Craft

Here is a note from author Jerry Craft about recent events surrounding his book, New Kid. HCPL is working with his publisher to arrange a virtual visit. Nothing is set yet, so we can make no promises, but we are hopeful that it may happen. Stay tuned! #jerrycraft

In October 2021, a local petition to ban books by Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Craft resulted in the postponement of his appearance in front of a Texas school district. Dissenters claim the book teaches critical race theory and therefore should not be taught in schools. The following is Craft....

How reading aloud can help you bond with your kids and make them better readers

As a parent of a grown daughter, I will admit I have a few regrets. There are always going to be things you would do differently with hindsight. But, I will never regret any of the time we spent reading together--not even the 37th straight bedtime reading of Honey Bunny Funnybunny.

It's not always easy to convince kids that reading isn't a chore. But reading aloud can help. Here are a few ways to help you find joy — and value — in reading aloud as a family.

Live Author Event! Our Heroes in History: Hispanic Icons

Are your kids looking for heroes to write about for Hispanic Heritage Month? Join authors Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford and José Angel Gutiérrez as they discuss their new bilingual biographies about Latino leaders. Ashford-Rivera, the author of Raulito: The First Latino Governor of Arizona / El primer gobernador latino de Arizona, writes about the obstacles Raúl H. Castro had to surmount to become the first—and only—Mexican-American governor of Arizona. Gutiérrez, the author of Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín: My Story of Cinco de Mayo / Mi version del Cinco de Mayo, writes about the Mexican general (born in what is now Texas!) who defeated the French Army at the Battle of Puebla that’s memorialized by the Cinco de Mayo holiday. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the authors questions.
This event is presented in partnership with Arte Publico Press

BookLawyer (www.BookLawyer.com) is a free legal information site where people find answers to their legal questions—and where lawyers demonstrate their knowledge to potential clients. Most law is state-specific, and BookLawyer allows people to: • search our database of state-specific short articles (Quick Summaries) written by lawyers; • ask a question anonymously in our state-specific Ask a Lawyer forum; • search our databases of millions of pages of state-specific court opinions and statutes; and • use our Find a Lawyer database to search for a lawyer in a specific state who is knowledgeable about a specific legal topic. These state-specific information resources are designed to be much more helpful than a generic Google search. BookLawyer also includes detailed definitions of nearly 1,700 legal topics that can be accessed by clicking on the Legal Topics tab.
I would like to introduce you to “The Short Story Book Stop”, a page on Facebook. This page carries a few amusing short stories, and links to four short story eBooks published on Amazon.com by Darvin Johnson. Please. At your leisure. Give this page a scrutiny and enjoy a story or two. Thank you for your kind indulgence.
At the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston we are proud to host a conversation with Ben Rhodes on June 10th. President Obama's former Chief Speechwriter, Deputy National Security Advisor, and close confidant, Ben Rhodes, who is also a Rice University graduate, will be expanding on his travels around the globe in a deeply personal, beautifully observed quest for answers. Accompanying us as moderator will be Evan Osnos, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer at The New Yorker. Together they will be answering the audience’s questions and navigating through the latest developments in America. All ticket purchases include a signed copy of Rhode's new work 'After the Fall: Being American in the World We've Made.'
Hi! Any idea if you will be reopening branches to the public for summer?
Great book ,great photos, just published. The money this Capt makes is unbelievable to move offshore drilling units and travel the world . Available at Amazon .com. bookstore
Any update when the libraries may reopen for in-person visits? I miss book browsing!
Attention Houston-area poets: Poets Northwest's 34th Annual Spring Fling Poetry Contests are now open, so start penning those poems. Twenty-seven awesome opportunities! Plenty of prize money waiting for winners - deadline March 25, 2021.
Hey! I live in Norwich in England, UK. I'm currently reading this book and it looks like it was from your library! Just wanted to say how cool it is that it has made it all the way here 😊
Every year Banned Books Week is a big deal and I see all the post. Will Librarians stand with Powell's books today as they were forced to close for selling a book online? Evacuating employees and customers out a back door? This is modern censorship. Do your thing.
Will you please share Curbside Larry's video that explains curbside voting in Houston? And also, could Curbside Larry please, please get a Twitter account?
Are you all offering any virtual storytime options for preschool kids? My girls so miss going to the library to hear stories and participate with the story teller.
