African American Mayors Association says they'll coordinate with White House, others to take in Afghans

“For decades, thousands of Afghan people put their lives on the line to combat the brutality of the Taliban and support humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Now that the Taliban have taken over, all of these heroes -- from translators to technical staff to transportation specialists -- are at risk of violent retaliation from the Taliban. And people across the country, particularly women, are in danger of losing fundamental rights. We owe it to these people to offer refuge in the United States,” Houston Mayor and African American Mayors Association President Sylvester Turner said in his statement.

An association representing African American mayors in the United States said the city leaders will work with the White House and states to take in as many Afghan refugees as possible.

For decades, thousands of Afghan people put their lives on the line to combat the brutality of the Taliban and support humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Now that the Taliban have taken over, all of these heroes -- from translators to technical staff to transportation specialists -- are at risk of violent retaliation from the Taliban. And people across the country, particularly women, are in danger of losing fundamental rights.

The African American Mayors Association will work with governors and The White House to ensure our nation welcomes as many refugees as possible. So many Afghan people put their lives at risk to support our country. We owe it to these people to offer refuge and not leave them behind.

Mayor Turner Gave Remarks at SCI Youth Leadership Summit and Proclaimed August 12 as International Youth Day in Houston

Yesterday, Mayor Sylvester Turner and #MOTIA Director Christopher Olson introduced United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, at the Public Forum of Sister Cities International's Virtual Youth Leadership Summit. With this year's theme, “Solving Today’s Problems to Build A Better Tomorrow," selected students ages 14-18 from around the world worked together to examine the 17 SDGs and develop solutions that their communities can implement to improve the everyday lives of their citizens.

August 12 also commemorated International Youth Day as designated by the UN. Given Houston's strong support for global youth and education, we are delighted to share that Mayor Turner has proclaimed August 12th as International Youth Day In the City of Houston.

In Houston, Global Youth and Education are amongst our top priorities, with the goal of better preparing the next generation of young leaders. Houston recognizes the importance of inspiring a global mindset that will guide youths and students in their career choices. Through local and global outreach, MOTIA aims to provide resources for local students to learn about the city’s global presence and share opportunities for international students to be engaged and grow academically and professionally.

On behalf of the City of Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner joined Mayor Ko Wen-je of Taipei City to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Sister City relationship between #Houston and #Taipei! Since 1961, Taipei was Houston first sister city, and likewise, Houston was also Taipei's first sister city. As Mayor Turner has said, "our friendship [with Taipei] has set a strong foundation to what it means to be a sister city with countries around the world."

Houston has an active Taiwanese community, with approximately 20,000 people in Houston and 80,000 people in the Greater Houston area. Our economic relationship with Taiwan has thrived, from our direct flight to Taipei with EVA Airways Corp. 長榮航空, to our active trade relationship valued at $5.2 billion in 2019. Last year, we are truly grateful of the support and contributions received from the Taiwanese community in Houston during COVID-19, including generous donations of PPE and masks to help those in need.

Houston is delighted to join hands with Taipei and cities around the world to share best practices and dialogue on how we can provide a better future for our citizens, including developing global education and learning, conducting cultural exchanges, building Smart Cities, leading the Energy Transition and tackling the challenge of Climate Action. We look forward to welcoming Taipei to our great city very soon, and to our continued collaboration to uphold the sister city mission.

Thank you Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Houston, Houston Taipei Society, Houston First and Sister Cities of Houston for your continued support and collaboration!

Here’s to another 60 years of friendship and to create a sustainable, resilient and inclusive home for all our citizens!

His Excellency Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, President of the Republic of #Panama, made a historic visit to Houston last week. During his visit to Port Houston , President Cortizo highlighted the importance of the connection between the Panama Canal and the Houston Ship Channel.

"The 2016 expansion of the Panama canal helped open new business opportunities and spurred the growth of Asia trade for #Houston. The canal's expanded capacity to accommodate larger vessels has helped increase the number of larger ships arriving to the Houston Ship Channel. Receiving these larger vessels has fostered continued growth in both import and export cargo, and had positive economic impact and job creation for the Houston region and for Texas as a whole. Last year Houston was ranked the #1 U.S. port in total tonnage; import containers from East Asia have grown 63%, and export containers have increased 96% since 2016."

#Houston has moved up the ranking of the top U.S. #convention destinations . It ranked No. 3 on Northstar Meetings Group latest Convention Cities Index beating out every other major city in the United States except Atlanta and Anaheim, California. The report factors in the amount of indoor exhibit space at each city’s largest convention center, number of hotel rooms within 15 minutes’ walking distance of the facility, average cost of a hotel room, travel time (without traffic) from the nearest major international airport to the convention center, and the city’s safety level for travelers.

I am honored and proud to stand with the Muslim community and all those who celebrate this auspicious occasion! Eid al-Adha commemorates the Abrahamic tradition of sacrificing what is dear to us in the name of God. It is an example of our shared roots in all of the world's Abrahamic faiths. Houston is the home of the largest Muslim population in the Southern United States and Islam is therefore a prominent part of the religious landscape of the city of Houston..... Extending a very heartfelt Eid Mubarak to all!

The Consulate updated the photo album with pictures from both receptions at the residence, view all photos here: https://gallery.charliehorsephotos.com/bastilledayatthefrenchconsulatehome/

"On the occasion of #bastilleday, French Consul Alexis Andres hosted a reception at the residence of France with TX officials, the consular corps, members of the business community, representatives of French associations and French elected officials. We were delighted with a few surprises. First, French Gunsmith Fabrice Champagnac presented two beautiful weapons (a gun and a saber) that belonged to the Marquis de Lafayette, a beautiful symbol of the French American relationship.
Secondly, chef Jean-Luc Royere and his team from the Post Oak Hotel served a splendid cake in blue, white and red of course! 🇫🇷
Thanks also to Jean-François Bonneté from BCI for the #14juillet themed cocktails!" - Consulate General of France in Houston

In Houston, we take pride in our cultural diversity and the amazing international programs taking place throughout our city.

Yesterday, Mayor Sylvester Turner kicked off the Anime Matsuri Convention with founder Deneice Leigh and The Honorable Hideo Fukushima, Consul General of Japan in Houston. This year, they celebrated Anime Matsuri’s 15th Anniversary in the City of Houston.

Mayor Turner was dressed as Kyōjurō Rengoku from the manga and anime, Demon Slayers.

We are excited to welcome the thousands of visitors to celebrate and highlight Japanese culture right here in our city.

On behalf of the City of Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner welcomed the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of #Mexico, H.E. Marcelo Ebrard, to the City of Houston for the inauguration of the new location of the Consulado General de México en Houston/ Consulate General of Mexico in Houston. Led by the Consul General of Mexico in Houston Alicia Kerber Palma , the celebration was joined by Mr. Roberto Velasco Alvarez, Vice-Minister for North American Affairs, Mr. Luis Gutierrez, Director- General for Mexican Diaspora, Mr. Jose Antonio Dominguez, Head of Administration Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.

In 2020, we had the honor of virtually celebrating the 100th anniversary of the consulate opening its doors to the people of Houston, and gathered this year in person to celebrate the opening of the consulate’s new location. Mexico is Houston’s second largest trading partner, and in some years our #toptradepartner, with trade averaging more than $19 billion a year. The opening of the new consulate building highlights the strong, vibrant, and dynamic relationship between Houston and Mexico. Thank you to Consul General Kerber and the entire team at the consulate for their continued commitment to assist Houstonians!
