- Houston ranks third among metro areas in Fortune 500 headquarters -

Houston added four companies to its #Fortune500 roster this year: Academy Sports + Outdoors, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, KBR, Inc., and NRG Energy. Academy Sports & Outdoors went public in October ’20 and is new to the Fortune ranking. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NRG announced relocations to Houston in ’20 and ’21 respectively.

"Texas has become a magnet for corporate relocations over the past decade, luring companies with the promise of lower taxes, less regulation, cheap housing for workers and warm weather."

Mark your calendars! Wed, Jun 16, 2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT

The Houston District Export Council , the US Department of Commerce Commercial Service Houston office, and the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Trade & International Affairs have partnered together to present "Scanning the Horizon at the #USMCA's First Anniversary: Sunny Skies or Storm Clouds?"

Nearly a year after the implementation of NAFTA's replacement, relatively few problems have surfaced for the tri-national #USMCA trade agreement. However, some sensitive issues remain unsettled such as auto industry rules of origin, dairy trade across the US and Canadian border, and labor provisions across the US and Mexican border. In addition, the Mexican elections offer a potential referendum on the direction of energy reform, and trade with China and migration from Central America loom large over the USMCA's implementation. If that wasn't enough, COVID-19 has impacted all three countries in different ways.

Please join the Houston DEC, the US Commercial Service, and the Houston Mayor’s office in discussing these key issues, positioning your company to succeed in the coming year.

Panelists include:
-Rachel McCormick, Consul General of #Canada in Dallas
-Alicia Kerber Palma, Consul General of #Mexico in Houston
-David Gantz, the Will Clayton Fellow in Trade and International Economics at the #BakerInstitute

Moderator: Christopher Olson, Director, Mayor's Office of Trade and International Affairs
Opening Remarks: Joseph Hanley, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary, for U.S. Field Operations at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration

The City of Houston marked its 4th annual Houston Africa Day celebration on May 27 by hosting the African Union Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Ambassador Hilda Suka-Mafudze, and more than 12 Ambassadors from African nations to Houston.

Africa Day, also known as African Unity Day, is celebrated annually on May 25. It commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), on this day in 1963.

Houston Africa Day, held annually by Mayor Sylvester Turner, showcases the diversity of the nation's 4th most populous city and its global presence. People from all backgrounds are welcome to join in the celebration with the African community to commemorate the business and cultural contributions of the African diaspora in Houston.

The day began with an invitation-only business forum. Houston is Africa’s 3rd largest trade partner and speakers will discuss opportunities for future business.

During the evening celebration, Houston showcased the different regions of the continent through arts, culture, and 'A taste of Africa,' keeping with the African Union 2021 Africa Day theme: Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa we Want.

"Houston Africa Day is a way to celebrate business and trade opportunities along with the vibrant art, culture, and food of our African diaspora in Houston," said Mayor Turner. "Houston takes great pride in our rich diversity, and Africa day is a chance to showcase Houston's ties to the African continent."

"As Africa grows, Houston will ensure that our relationship with this rich and diverse continent will continue to flourish as well. Africa Day is one of our ways to showcase this relationship," said Houston's Global Trade Manager for Africa, Mazda Denon.

Powering the #cleantechrevolution
Two of the world's major petrochemical clusters cities, #Houston and #Antwerp, have set the energy transition at the top of their list of priorities. Together with the industry, efforts will be made to reduce CO2 emissions and the transition to alternative energy sources through ambitious transition projects, such as generating renewable energy, using residual heat, and importing, storing and converting hydrogen into sustainable building blocks for the chemical sector.

Countering #climatechange requires the development of innovative technology as well as a sustained global commitment for a clean energy economy. Join representatives from the City of Houston, Greater Houston Partnership, City of Antwerp, Flanders Investment and Trade, and Port of Antwerp for a 2-day virtual mission on May 19-20 discussing powering the cleantech revolution.

Houston Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

In May, join Houston and #MOTIA to commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with the city of Houston! As Mayor Sylvester Turner says, "the cultural fabric of our city would not be the same without the remarkable contributions and dedication received from our Asian American and Pacific Islanders community. Their generations of story continued to inspire us and we proudly support all that you do." Our city is enriched by the presence of and contributions by citizens of #AAPI descent, and we greatly value their important roles in the cultural, civic, and commercial aspects in our city.
