Welcome Ulsan Metropolitan City as Houston's 19th Sister City!

“#Houston and #Ulsan, sharing a common interest in energy, education, medicine and biotechnology, disaster management and safety, information technology, tourism¸ and the desire to promote mutual understanding among our citizens, do hereby proclaim themselves Sister Cities.”

On November 19, 2021, on behalf of the City of Houston, Mayor Turner welcomed Mayor Song Chul-Ho of Ulsan, Republic of Korea, back to our great city! This visit commemorated the signing of the sister city agreement, the final step into formalizing the #sistercity relationship between Houston and Ulsan. Houston is incredibly proud of all our sister city relationships. It is through global partnerships with cities and countries around the world that Houston has grown into a great global city, the most diverse city in America; and we are proud to have built this with the support of our Korean community.

Ulsan, officially the Ulsan Metropolitan City, is the Republic of Korea's seventh largest metropolis with a population of over 1.1 million. Houston has one of the most robust Korean communities in the U.S., with 35,000 residents of Korean descent living in our city. Growing trade and commerce between the two regions place the Republic of Korea as Houston’s 4th largest international trade partner in 2019, with trade valued at $13.5 billion. From the beloved “KFest” the nationally-recognized annual Korean Festival Houston, to Spring Branch, Houston's largest Koreatown district offering culture, education, businesses, and, of course, the delicious Korean food scene throughout our city. We greatly value your important role in the cultural, civic and commercial life of our city.

Houston looks forward to working closely with Ulsan's team and the Korean community in Houston to ensure a fruitful sister city relationship with Ulsan for years to come.

Welcome #Ulsan, Republic of Korea as Houston’s 19th Sister City!

Yesterday I had the honor of witnessing the signing ceremony to make the City of Ulsan our official Sister City! This is Houston’s 19th Sister City. District A is lucky to be home to so many Korean Americans and their businesses. It is such a privilege to serve this community! I know this was a very important day for so many constituents, and I was so glad to get to be a part of it! Mayor's Office of Trade and International Affairs

The Ismaili Center, Houston - Design Preview Event

This week MOTIA attended the unveiling of the design plans for the first Ismaili Center in the U.S. set to be built on Allen Parkway and Montrose Boulevard with commissioning from His Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. Once it's complete, it'll join its counterparts in London, Lisbon, Dubai, Dushanbe, Vancouver and Toronto.
“The Center will elevate, yet again, Houston on the world map as a global city where people of all backgrounds can come together," says Turner. "The Ismaili Muslim community in Houston and the United States continues to actualize the values that these Centers aim to promote – friendship, service, and mutual understanding.”

Rumor no more: Top Chef selects Houston for new season

Top Chef season 19 is in production in Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. The racial and ethnic diversity of Houston’s population is represented in the city’s vibrant culinary scene, making it a perfect backdrop to inspire our next wave of cheftestants," the network said in a statement published on the Bravo website. "We hope to showcase the rich heritage of Houstonians through the food that defines them."

Top Chef selected Houston for its diversity that includes large populations of immigrants from around the world. Episodes could spotlight people of Hispanic, Indian, Nigerian, Vietnamese, and Chinese heritage who call Houston home.

"I cannot think of a more perfect pairing than Top Chef and the City of Houston. Both represent a celebration of cuisine, culture and innovation,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a statement. “We are proud of the diverse community and unique heritage that makes our city such a hot culinary destination — from classics like Tex-Mex and barbecue to local inventions like Viet-Cajun and Japanese Tapas. As any Top Chef contestant will tell you, the best food is born out of passion, and Houstonians exemplify this idea with every dish we create.”

Proceed cautiously when shopping at Whole Foods for the next couple months. Camera crews and contestants may be running through the aisles.  After weeks of rumors, Bravo has officially confirmed ...

African American Mayors Association says they'll coordinate with White House, others to take in Afghans

“For decades, thousands of Afghan people put their lives on the line to combat the brutality of the Taliban and support humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Now that the Taliban have taken over, all of these heroes -- from translators to technical staff to transportation specialists -- are at risk of violent retaliation from the Taliban. And people across the country, particularly women, are in danger of losing fundamental rights. We owe it to these people to offer refuge in the United States,” Houston Mayor and African American Mayors Association President Sylvester Turner said in his statement.

Mayor Turner Gave Remarks at SCI Youth Leadership Summit and Proclaimed August 12 as International Youth Day in Houston

Yesterday, Mayor Sylvester Turner and #MOTIA Director Christopher Olson introduced United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, at the Public Forum of Sister Cities International's Virtual Youth Leadership Summit. With this year's theme, “Solving Today’s Problems to Build A Better Tomorrow," selected students ages 14-18 from around the world worked together to examine the 17 SDGs and develop solutions that their communities can implement to improve the everyday lives of their citizens.

August 12 also commemorated International Youth Day as designated by the UN. Given Houston's strong support for global youth and education, we are delighted to share that Mayor Turner has proclaimed August 12th as International Youth Day In the City of Houston.

In Houston, Global Youth and Education are amongst our top priorities, with the goal of better preparing the next generation of young leaders. Houston recognizes the importance of inspiring a global mindset that will guide youths and students in their career choices. Through local and global outreach, MOTIA aims to provide resources for local students to learn about the city’s global presence and share opportunities for international students to be engaged and grow academically and professionally.
