The Houston Consular Ball exemplifies Houston’s spirit of vitality and global engagement, as well as its tireless commitment to progress, whether it is in the fields of space exploration, technology, medicine, energy, or the arts. Normally held each year as a white-tie gala, today Mayor Sylvester Turner honored the more than 90 consulates with representation in Houston by hosting a virtual Consular Ball and Grand March. We welcomed remarks by the Vice Dean of the Consular Corps, our Consular Ball Underwriters Chevron and Houston First, and concluded with Mayor Turner providing a toast to commemorate the occasion. Thank you to the Houston Consular Corps for all that you do to enrich the lives of #Houston and our city’s residents.

Happy #NationalDay to #Qatar! This day commemorates Qatar's unification in 1878.
Houston has a strong relationship with Qatar, and Qatar has supported Houston residents during times of crisis, from relief after Hurricane Harvey, to donating PPE supplies to first responders and the HER Task Force, to funding Thanksgiving meals for Houston families. Additionally, the University of Houston Clear Lake recently signed an MOU with Qatar to open the Diplomacy Institute to help train our next generation of global leaders.
Houston and Qatar continue to have good trade relations as well. From 2017 to 2018, trade increased from $637.3 million to $1.02 billion, a 60% positive change signifying the development of economic collaboration.
Before the onset of the pandemic, on February 25, 2020 Mayor Turner formally welcomed Consul General Al Dehaimi to his new posting in Houston.

Houston also has strong trade relations with Poland, growing from $400 million in 2017 to $729 million in 2018, an 81.6% increase. Today is #Angola's Independence Day, celebrating 45 years of the country's independence on November 11.
Angola's strong ties with Houston are reflected through our shared city-to-city partnerships. This week we celebrate #Panama National Day!
The ties between Houston and Panama are strong, and exemplified by the trade that connects Houston and Panama, and that transits the Panama canal. In 2014, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the City of Houston and the City of #Colón, a city on the Caribbean coast at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal, to further our cultural and economic ties. Texas remains the trading partner for Panama, and the Canal’s expansion will continue to further our connection with the country, and people, of Panama.
In 2005, the local Panamanian community established the
Houston Association of Panamanians, Inc. a non-profit business organization composed of volunteers who aim to preserve Panamanian culture, as well as promote the advancement of learning skills through educational and job opportunities.

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of #Nigeria Independence Day. On October 1 of 1960, Africa’s most populous nation declared its independence and celebrated the unity of Nigeria’s 36 states. #Houston is proud to have one of the largest Nigerian populations living outside of Nigeria, and as Mayor Sylvester Turner said, "the Nigerian community is a vital part of the fabric of Houston's diverse and inclusive communities." Happy Independence Day to Nigeria!
Today is #Mexico’s Independence Day, September 16, celebrating the anniversary of the "Cry of Dolores", the call to arms which began Mexico's struggle for independence in 1810. Each year, the date is marked by a reenactment of the Grito by the President of Mexico, which will be broadcast virtually this year, as well as celebrations and parades. Mexico is the number-one trade partner for Houston, with a total of $21.7 billion of goods traded in 2019 alone. The inauguration of the new USMCA agreement this July will further build ties for businesses and trade. Aside from trade, Tampico, Mexico has been a Houston Sister City since 2003, and Houston hosts one of the 50 Mexican Consulate Generals in the USA. In 2016, Mayor Sylvester Turner visited Mexico on a trade mission to coincide with the NFL #Texans playing in Mexico City, highlighting the tourism, cultural, and trade opportunities that the Houston-Mexico relationship holds. This October 10, 2015, Mayor Annise D. Parker hosted the Houston Consular Ball “Innovation in a World City,” the City’s premier white tie event. The ball, as a part of the 2015 Annual Consular Forum, recognized the members of the nation’s third-largest consular corps and honored the diversity that makes Houston such a unique and powerful player on the global stage. For over 63 years, the Consular Forum has brought together leaders in our diplomatic and political community, titans of business, and executives in the fields of education, culture and the arts. Attendees have continued to interact and network, forming and building upon the bonds and community that collectively drives the growth of Houston’s economy and its ever-increasing position in the global Marketplace. This year’s innovation theme celebrated Houston’s unceasing drive towards new and better solutions, as it continuously redefines its place in the world. Through a series of seminars, hosted by key Houston companies and education institutions, the forum highlighted the industries in Houston that have become world renown, such as aviation and space, healthcare, energy, our port region and global technologies. We would like to sincerely thank seminar hosts as well as the sponsors that have so generously contributed to the Forum and Houston International Initiatives, an organization which serves to continually promote and connect Houston to the world around us. In addition to helping fund the Houston International Initiative, a portion of the proceeds from the event went to supporting international programs at select Houston Universities.
