The Party for Socialism and Liberation believes that the only solution to the deepening crisis of capitalism is the socialist transformation of society. Driven by an insatiable appetite for ever greater profits regardless of social cost, capitalism is on a collision course with the people of the world and the planet itself. Imperialist war; deepening unemployment and poverty; deteriorating health care, housing and education; racism; discrimination and violence based on gender and sexual orientation; environmental destruction—all are inevitable products of the capitalist system itself. For the great majority of people in the world, including tens of millions of workers in the United States, conditions of life and work are worsening. There is no prospect that this situation can or will be turned around under the existing system. There are really only two choices for humanity today—an increasingly destructive capitalism, or socialism.

Thanks to all who joined us at the Houston Liberation Center for our Black August screening and discussion of Attica, the 2021 documentary film about the historic Attica Prison Rebellion.

The rich discussions after the screening made clear that the murder of George Jackson and the subsequent rebellion at Attica are not simply historic mile-markers of the Black Liberation struggle, but are lessons to apply to a contemporary fight.

As our most fundamental rights as poor and working people are under attack under this administration, Black August serves as a reminder that the struggle for Black Liberation is the rising tide that lifts all boats.

As we close out the month of August, we encourage all those determined to build a better world to continue studying the lessons of the Black revolutionaries who continue to guide our movement today.

BREAKING: LORENZO’S MURDER EXPECTED TO BE HEARD BY GRAND JURY SOON

Houston District Attorney Sean Teare recently revealed that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s shooting could be heard by a Grand Jury soon, paving the way for a potential criminal prosecution of the ICE agent(s) involved. Two of Lorenzo’s passengers have been released while the third, Victor Salgado Araujo remains in custody. These three men’s eyewitness testimony directly contradicts the federal authorities’ absurd narrative and will be critical for securing the indictment.

BLACK AUGUST FILM SCREENING: ATTICA (2021)

On August 21, 1971, George Jackson was murdered by prison guards at San Quentin State Prison. Jackson was a Black socialist revolutionary, theoretician, author, and prison organizer whose death sparked outrage across the country. The day following his murder, over 700 prisoners in Attica Prison—on the other side of the country in upstate New York— launched a one-day hunger strike.

Over the following days, their anger at Jackson’s murder and the brutal and inhumane conditions they faced in their own facility led to the Attica Uprising, or the Attica Prison Rebellion. When all was said and done, over 40 prisoners were murdered by state police.

Join us this Friday at the Houston Liberation Center for a film screening and discussion of ATTICA, a documentary film detailing the uprising.

🗣️ THE PEOPLE DEMAND: ICE OUT OF HOUSTON!

The people of Houston showed up at City Hall once again, as they have for months on end, to demand accountability from Mayor Whitmire and the Houston Police Department. Instead of facing the public and their questions about HPDICE collaboration in good faith at the long-awaited public safety meeting this morning, the city’s Chief of Police and Mayor both no-showed. This cowardly shirking of responsibility makes clear that neither respect the people of this city who have used every possible channel available to them to demand justice.

As we near 50 days with no answers since Lorenzo’s murder, the Houston Police Department continues to go above and beyond what is legally necessary when collaborating with the rogue federal agency sowing terror across our city.

ICE is deeply unpopular and the people of this city are not going to stop demanding answers to our questions! JUSTICE FOR LORENZO! END ALL ICEHPD COLLABORATION NOW!

After a sham “Public Safety” meeting at 10am this morning in which HPD Chief Noe Diaz was supposed to appear and answer public questions about ICE and HPD’s ongoing collaboration, the community showed up at City Hall hours later to demand an end to this cooperation which only threatens public safety.

At today’s morning meeting, neither the HPD Chief nor Mayor Whitmire appeared, making perfectly clear what they think of the communities they’re supposed to serve. If this collaboration is legal and improving public safety as they say, why are they hiding from public questioning?

Houstonians widely reject ICE and their domestic terror campaign being waged in our city. Until this collaboration ends, the community will continue to apply pressure!

This morning, Houston City Council was meant to host a long-anticipated session on public safety in which the Houston Police Department would report on their collaboration with ICE. Yet, despite several times suggesting he would be in attendance, HPD chief Diaz no-showed and instead sent a civilian Data Analyst in his stead—one who was repeatedly instructed by the City Attorney’s Office to not respond to any questions of substance.

Nearing 2 months since Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s murder and several other instances of ICE detention made possible by HPD’s eager collaboration, the community awaits justice. Why is HPD waiting hours for ICE to arrive on the scene during routine traffic stops? Why is the Chief of Police hiding behind a mid-manager Data Analyst instead of facing public questioning? Who killed Lorenzo and why have they not been prosecuted? Why is $7MM in taxpayer funds going to Flock surveillance cameras?

Join us today at 5pm at City Hall for public comment and make your voices heard! ICE terror must end! And the first step is to immediately end cooperation from the Houston Police. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!

That’s how much taxpayer money is projected to be spent on mass deportations during the second Trump administration — money that could instead fund necessities in our communities, like teachers, firefighters, nurses, veterans’ medical care, Medicaid, Head Start, SNAP, public housing, paid parental leave, and more.

We’re constantly told by both Democrats and Republicans that there isn’t enough money to meet people’s basic needs. But as we see with the endless bipartisan wars waged at home and abroad, the resources are there. The question is what they’re being used for — and who they serve.

Under capitalism, our collective resources are weaponized in service of the agendas of the wealthy and powerful, rather than being used to meet the needs of working people.

We need a new system where working people have the power to determine how our resources are used and how our future is planned. That system is called socialism.

Houstonians, like people across the country, are sick and tired of ICE terror and mass surveillance in our community! FULL HOUSE FOR ANTI-FLOCK FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION ! 🎥💥

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our film screening of The Conversation and discussion on FLOCK cameras in Houston for NO ALPR Week in partnership with Texas Civil Rights Project.

Automatic License Plate Recognition Cameras (ALPRs) are tools of mass surveillance used to watch, track, and surveil everyday working people on their way to work, to their homes, and in their communities. In 2022 the City of Houston approved a $6.4 million contract with FLOCK Saftey, the company that makes these AI-powered cameras, and has installed over 4,000 cameras across the greater Houston area. Houston-area police have been known to abuse this technology and conduct unnecessary and excessive searches unrelated to any active investigation. What is the state doing with all this data—and who is profiting from it?

All across the country, these cameras are widely unpopular and communities have been organizing to remove them and prevent any further contracts. Yesterday, we discussed how these cameras have been used to specifically target vulnerable communities in Houston, and how residents can fight back.
