#CharacterMatters and #Excellence is the Civil Air Patrol cadet virtue lesson topic for February. The USA is about to celebrate #PresidentsDay this weekend. We continue a series of quotes from the late President Abraham Lincoln on the topic of excellence. Excellence doesn't come from perfection. It comes from continuing to improve. He said:

"My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure."

Join the chaplain corps for more on this topic.

Today in aviation history....In 2009 Captain Chesley Sullenberger, aka Sully, and his copilot, Jeff Skiles, encountered a flock of geese immediately after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York. The ingestion of geese into both engines turned their Airbus into a glider. Since they had just taken off, they had no altitude and no airspeed to work with and were unable to make it to any of the three airports that were nearby. Captain Sullenberger made the decision to ditch the aircraft in the freezing water of the Hudson River. Though seemingly ill advised, he successfully did so and all 155 people on board survived and only a few were injured. This event has become known as the Miracle on the Hudson.

Are you living up to this month’s core value?

Are you living up to this month’s core value?

#CharacterMatters ... The virtue of #Integrity is the first core value. One of its meanings is to be true to yourself. According to abolitionist Frederick Douglass:

“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.”

Join the chaplain corps for more on this important virtue during the month.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, more than 1,800 cadets missed an opportunity to attend in-person special activities and encampments in 2020. They stayed home and connected to their squadrons virtually. They missed flight academies. They missed life-changing experiences.

As a result, we have received a significant increase in applications and scholarship assistance. In 2021, help shape the lives of deserving cadets with the gift of life-changing experiences. Donate today!

Today in aviation history....In 1944 General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold was appointed General of the Army.
General Arnold's military career started in 1903 when he entered West Point. He had been an alternate for admission and only received his appointment after the person in line ahead of him admitted to being married, which led to his disqualification. While at West Point, General Arnold was a cofounder of the Black Hat, which was a group of cadet pranksters. This would eventually earn him his nickname, Happy, which was shortened to Hap.
After being commissioned a 2Lt in 1907 and serving 4 years in Infantry and Ordinance, General Arnold applied for transfer to the Signal Corps in 1911 and pursued pilot training. In July of that year he would receive international pilot certificate #29 and one year later would receive military aviator certificate #2. He would go on to win numerous aviation awards and set many records before the US became involved in the Great War, where he would become the youngest full Colonel in the Army.
Soon after the US entered WWII, Arnold was promoted to Lt. General (3 star) and given command of the Army Air Forces. In this role he was responsible for all strategic aerial programs, including the strategic bombing of Germany and the long range bomber program necessary to defeat Japan. He would receive 26 awards and decorations for his service during WWII.
In 1949, General Arnold was appointed General of the Air Force. He was the only person to ever hold that title and is also the only person to hold 5 star rank in two US military services. The second achievement award in the Civil Air Patrol cadet program is named in his honor and he was the class exemplar of the US Air Force Academy Class of 2012.
General Arnold died in 1950. He received a state funeral including the rare honor of services in the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery where he is interred.

CIVIL AIR PATROL in this book!!! I'm a volunteer at Lone Star Flight Museum! My book "Born on the Moon - Living in the Space Age" is now available in paperback and ebook formats. It is all color and visually exciting. Oh, yeah -- the content is terrific! Done in a visually compelling scrapbook style it spans my life from space dreams to reality. It is filled with graphics and photographs, family history, sci-fi influence, flying at age 15 (CAP), traveling abroad, working on satellite data and at NASA. It entertains and motivates people to envision their future and learn ways to achieve it. This may be the FIRST book written by a Puerto Rican woman working in the space industry as a contributor and eye witness to history! It has taken me decades of work and thousands of dollars to create this first publication. Please: > BUY & READ & REVIEW & SHARE & REPEAT
Hi would it be possible to buy a squadron patch for my collection. I was a cadet years ago, prior USAF and USN, and now a CAP patron member. If you have any other CAP patches new or used I would buy or trade for them also. If you have any older versions of you squadron patch I can also use them and I can send a return envelope Thank you Roger LaShomb 1592 Co. Rt. 38 Norfolk, New York 13667
