Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful will NOT be hosting a Juniata River Cleanup this year.

However, we do want to challenge the Huntingdon County community to continue making a difference! Here's how:

1.) Get outside to a nearby state park, nature trail, or waterway.
2.) If you see litter, pick it up! Just make sure you wear gloves!
3.) Dispose of the litter properly in a marked receptacle (i.e. trash can, dumpster, etc.).
4.) Optional: Post a picture with #keephuntingdoncountybeautiful to have your hard work recognized on our page!

Questions? Please contact the KHCB Coordinator at [email protected] or 814-627-1626.

Check out this online landfill tour! While it is best to reduce, reuse, and recycle before throwing something away, landfills are important to keep our land, air, and water safe from toxins in our trash. We take an annual landfill tour with local students each spring - it is definitely eye opening!

LANDFILL TOUR โ€“ Thanks to our Business Partners, PWIA (PA Waste Industry Association) & Republicservices for sharing their video, which takes you through a typical landfill and shows you how it all works. #KPBBusinessPartners http://pawasteindustries.org/waste-industry/landfill-tour/

Congratulations to Greg Williams - one of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful's Volunteers of the Year! His beautification efforts, dedication, and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated! Please join us in thanking him for all of this great work!

Today's 2019 Volunteer of the Year is Greg Williams with Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful. Greg joined the Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful (KHCB) community in 2016 and has since made a lasting impression. Greg is an outdoor enthusiast, with a gift for beautifying and restoring native landscapes and has been heavily involved with KHCBโ€™s annual efforts to improve Detwiler Memorial Park & Nature Trail along Standing Stone Creek in Huntingdon, PA. Greg has contributed to these efforts by planting trees, removing invasives, collecting live stakes, and providing general maintenance to the nature trail. In addition, Greg is active in restoring the Lower Trail, a 17-mile Rails to Trail path that parallels the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River from Alexandria, PA in Huntingdon County, to Canoe Creek State Park in Blair County as well as with beautifying Walnut Springs Park, a community park located in State College.

This past Saturday, KHCB volunteers collected 1,962 tires as part of the 14th Annual Tire War Challenge! This includes 1,852 car/truck tires, 74 tractor trailer tires, and 36 tractor tires. To put this in perspective, we filled two 53' long tractor trailers from top to bottom! We await the results from the other participating counties to determine if KHCB retains the Gold Rim Award.

Instead of polluting our land and streams, these tires are taken to Mahantango Enterprises in Liverpool, PA, where they are reclaimed and recycled into usable products such as rubber mulch for playgrounds or athletic tracks. This event was made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Household/Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Program.

The 14th Annual Tire Recycling Challenge will take place at the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 14th, 2019. Volunteers will be collecting and loading tires from 8am - 12pm! Collection fees remain the same as last year. Spread the word!

Last year, Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful won the Gold Rim Award by recycling 1,722 tires! Adding in the tires collected by the other counties - Mifflin County 328 tires; Perry County 439 tires; and Juniata County 824 tires - the event totaled 3,313 tires! Instead of polluting our land and streams, those tires will be recycled into usable products such as rubber mulch for playground or athletic tracks. This past Sunday, 22 hardworking volunteers removed 2,560 pounds of trash and 31 tires from a 3.2 mile stretch of the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River! Some of the notable items removed included two water heaters, a roll of flooring, and a circular saw! At the conclusion of the event, volunteers were treated to a lunch provided by Paesano's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria Dari-Treet, and ice cream served by Shelly Bliss, Kelly Bliss, Samantha Bliss, and Eleanor Isenberg from the Huntingdon County Dairy Promotion!

We would like to recognize and thank the following businesses for their continued support of the Juniata River Cleanup event; Rothrock Outfitters, Park's Garbage Service, Weis Markets, and GIANT Food Stores. A thank you also goes out to the Main Street Cafe and Edgewater Inn and Riverside Grill for allowing us to use your facilities to host this year's cleanup! The 7th Annual Juniata River Cleanup will take place on Sunday, August 25th, 2019. This year, we will be cleaning the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River, starting at the Main Street Cafe parking lot, and concluding at the Edgewater Inn and Riverside Grill. This will be about a 3 mile float.

Last year, our hardworking volunteers paddled a 5.2 mile stretch along the main stem of the Juniata River, and removed approximately 4.76 tons of trash and 160 tires! Let's continue to Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful! To volunteer, please RSVP to the KHCB Coordinator.

Have you ever seen trash bags along your roadway and wondered why? Thank some local volunteers and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for the Adopt -a- highway program! Volunteers adopt a section of roadway, pick up litter each spring (or more often!), and then PennDOT trucks pick up these bags for proper disposal. This is a great way to participate in the #greatamericancleanupofpa!!

Huntingdon Paddling Survey

We're reaching out to our river cleanup friends from one of our partners in the paddling community. They'd like to gather information about support for a play feature to be installed in lower Stone Creek, located at the water intake dam for Huntingdon borough.
The project would also include much needed improvements to the Blair Park wall. Ideally this would improve that area of the creek/town, and draw in visitors. Please take a minute to fill out their survey and share with others who may be interested.
