"One of my consumers had been struggling for several months to obtain Direct Support Worker (DSW) services. He wasn't sure who to contact, and the process had become overwhelming. ​

His goal was to find a reliable DSW who could provide the support he needed to remain as independent as possible. I worked with him to research his options and made calls alongside him until we discovered that, because he was on the Physical Disability (PD) Waiver, his services could be coordinated through his Managed Care Organization (MCO). ​
​
Once we established the correct pathway, I helped him search for, interview, and hire a DSW who was a good fit for his needs. The outcome was that the consumer was finally connected with the services he had been trying to access for months. ​
​
He now has a Direct Support Worker in place, greater confidence in navigating the system, and a better understanding of the resources available to him. Seeing his relief and knowing he no longer had to face the process alone made this a particularly rewarding success story."​

Beyond Barriers staff was happy to attend the Kansas Disability Caucus in Topeka! Organizations come together from all across the state to plan, organize and coordinate activities that promote independent living through collaboration, networking, education, planning, and peer-to-peer interaction.

The first Disability Caucus took place in 1988, when about ninety people gathered in Salina to identify issues of concern. These issues were brought to the forefront during that year's legislative session, and by 1989 Kansas passed a Self-Direction law, K.S.A. 39-7,100.​
​
This allowed the establishment of the first consumer directed personal assistance services in Kansas history, proving that when people unite toward a common cause, it does make a difference! 💪​

Each year, more than 70 consumers and community members like Kyda receive wheelchairs and mobility aids through Beyond Barriers. 🎉​

“This has been a life changer. You have no idea the things that I can do now that I haven't been able to do.”​

But more often than not, the need doesn’t stop with the mobility aid. Consumers often still need a ramp, bathroom remodel, or other upgrades to make their home accessible—and we need your help! 🙏​

We’re looking for 100 people who can give a recurring monthly gift of just $25 to Beyond Barriers to help our consumers bridge the gap from having a mobility aid to having an accessible home in which to use it. ​
