Riley spent years curating her dream home, only to lose it all in a moment when her boyfriend had a violent outburst.

But thankfully, because of you and supporters like you, Coburn Place had an open apartment ready for Riley filled with furniture, decor, art and love.

"I may never meet the people who donated or chose the artwork in my apartment, but I want them to know that it mattered more than they'll ever understand. It made me feel like a person again."

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Coburn Place, we recognize that healing from trauma doesn’t happen in isolation – it happens together. That’s why we offer wraparound services and a whole-family approach to healing, including family therapy and support for adults and kids. Black communities are more likely to have multigenerational households, and research shows these methods are more effective and long-lasting than traditional, individual-centered approaches. Healing is deeper when it’s shared. The Black community is especially susceptible to racial trauma. This includes hate crimes and everyday occurrences like microaggressions. These experiences may lead to PTSD symptoms.

Recognizing racial trauma is crucial, but many mental health providers miss it due to a lack of awareness or discomfort discussing issues related to race. Black people need mental health providers who understand racial trauma, and everyone deserves access to quality care.

Sharing this post is a great way to help someone who might be struggling with racial trauma. Together, we can create a safe space for healing.

We hosted a Mother’s Day Brunch to celebrate all the moms and motherly figures at Coburn Place!

Survivors enjoyed a tasty lunch, created beautiful flower bouquets, smiled big at a photo booth, and received gifts to take home. It was wonderful to celebrate and honor the strength and care our survivors show every day. 💜

Thank you to Progressive Baptist Church and Ruthella’s Touch for making this amazing event possible!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish – it’s necessary. Making space to care for your mental health can help you feel more grounded, energized and at peace.

Here are three simple ways to practice taking time for yourself:
• Go for a walk and unplug from your phone
• Set aside ten quiet minutes to breathe or journal
• Make space to read, watch your favorite show or practice a hobby
