Baby Girl has discovered a very effective way to make sure you never stop petting her.

She simply backs up the butt. 😂

This 6-year-old girl is a serious fan of butt scratches. Stop too soon and she'll push herself back toward you, give you a look or even whine until service resumes. Once she gets comfortable, she may just plop herself right into your lap—apparently forgetting that all 57 pounds of her are attached to that backside. ❤️

Baby Girl came to IACS after spending her entire life with her family. They could no longer afford her care, but they gave us lots of information about the dog she's been at home.

She's house-trained, free-roamed when left alone, rides well in the car and knows sit, down and shake. Her family described her as calm, sweet and great with new people.

Baby Girl does have a history of guarding her food around another dog. Because of that history, we're currently recommending that she be the only dog in her new home. She should also not live with cats.

She's had some medical needs addressed since arriving at IACS, including being treated for fleas and being spayed. She does have significant dental disease that may require additional veterinary care after adoption.

Through everything, Baby Girl has continued showing us what an affectionate girl she is. She's easy to walk, loves giving kisses and seems happiest when she's right next to someone getting all the attention she believes she deserves.

After six years in a home, we'd love to get this girl back to the life she knows—with a family, a comfortable place to sleep and, obviously, an unlimited butt-scratch budget. ❤️

Oliver has apparently decided that personal space is overrated.

Why stand next to someone when you can wrap your front paws around their leg and give them a hug instead? ❤️

That's exactly what Oliver did on one of his walks. Once he was away from the noise of the kennel area, he stopped, wrapped his paws around his volunteer's leg and asked for some love. He continued checking in throughout the walk, leaning against them whenever he thought it was time for another round of affection.

And apparently, this wasn't a one-time thing.

During a recent trip to the dog park, Oliver once again proved that people are his favorite form of enrichment. He explored a little and got in some zoomies, but mostly he wanted to stay close to his person. Staff described him as incredibly sweet, friendly and very people-focused.

Oliver also enjoys car rides, nature walks, dog-friendly businesses, treats and kisses. He can pull when he's excited to get somewhere, but he's been described as strong without being difficult to manage.

When Oliver arrived at IACS, he looked like life hadn't been especially kind to him. He was underweight with sores, irritated skin and other signs that he'd been through a rough stretch.

You wouldn't know it from the way he approaches people.

Oliver isn't dwelling on where he's been. He's busy handing out hugs, leaning in for affection and making sure nobody forgets to pet him.

Now we'd really like to see him doing all of that with a family of his own. ❤️

At 8 years old, Diesel may technically be a senior, but apparently nobody remembered to tell Diesel. 😂

This 69-pound guy still has plenty of enthusiasm for walks, toys, zoomies and—most importantly—people.

Diesel has been consistently friendly and easy to handle at IACS. He greets people with a loose, wiggly body, takes treats gently and already knows "sit." Get him outside and he's happy to explore, chase a tennis ball or settle in with something to chew.

He's also an accomplished kisser. One Doggy Day Out volunteer reported that Diesel delivered "some of the sloppiest smooches around." Consider yourself warned. 😂

Diesel is a big, playful guy who doesn't always realize just how much dog he is. He can get jumpy and a little mouthy when he's excited, and we've seen him accidentally knock over small children while trying to play. Because of that, a home without small children would likely be the best fit.

And while Diesel has plenty of energy, he knows how to settle, too. During enrichment, he's happily relaxed on a bed with a chew, and on his Doggy Day Out he enjoyed lounging around along with getting out for a nature walk.

Unfortunately, the longer Diesel stays at the shelter, the harder it's becoming for him to cope. He's beginning to show signs of kennel stress and has started medication to help him while he's here.

At 8 years old, we'd much rather see Diesel spending his days on adventures, enjoying soft beds and handing out those sloppy kisses to someone of his own. ❤️

Some dogs wait for you to choose a toy.

Xena brings the toy to you and lets you know it's time to get to work. 😂

This 70-pound girl loves to play, and tug is a particular favorite. During enrichment, she repeatedly nudged toys into her handler's lap until they got the message. Once she'd burned off some energy, she happily settled down with a lick mat and quickly figured out a treat puzzle.

Playful AND smart. ❤️

Before coming to IACS, Xena spent years living in a home, so she already has plenty of experience being someone's companion. Her previous family described her as loving and loyal. She knows sit, down and shake, enjoys car rides and likes being included in whatever her people are doing.

She's also very affectionate.

During a recent trip to the dog park, Xena spent her time running around and exploring before coming back for plenty of cuddles and attention. Staff described her as sweet, affectionate and easy to handle. She wasn't bothered by riding lawn mowers working nearby or dogs being walked in the distance.

Xena is an active, strong girl who would love a home where she can get plenty of exercise, enrichment and time with her people. Shelter life can sometimes be overwhelming for her, particularly around other dogs in the kennel area, so don't be surprised if the Xena you meet outside looks a little different from the one you first see through the kennel door.

Give her some room to run, something to figure out and a person to love, and this girl really starts to shine.

Just don't sit down with an empty lap and expect Xena not to fill it—with herself or a tug toy. 😂

The pool is closed to people, but it is going to the dogs! 🐶💦

Before the JCC drains its pools for the winter, some of our adoptable dogs are getting the ultimate end-of-summer treat: an evening of swimming, splashing and meeting potential families.

Meelo is 72 pounds of happy, excited dog who seems pretty convinced there's always something interesting happening just around the corner. 😂

This handsome 2-year-old came to IACS as a stray, and since then, we've been getting to know him.

Meelo can be eager to get going, but once outside, he settles into exploring. On a recent walk, he enjoyed sniffing everything, marking all the important spots and checking out his surroundings. He walked pretty nicely once he got going, although at 72 pounds, there's definitely some muscle behind him when he decides he'd like to get somewhere faster.

He's also discovered that treats are VERY important.

Meelo knows sit and down, happily worked for snacks and even gave his handler a little bark when treat delivery wasn't happening quite fast enough. Apparently, good service is expected around here. 😂

Underneath all that enthusiasm is a friendly guy. Meelo has allowed affection and tolerated all of his medical handling and restraint.

We don't know what Meelo's life looked like before he became a stray. At just 2 years old, though, he has a whole lot of life—and adventures—still ahead of him.

Now he just needs someone to share them with. ❤️

ADOPTED! Slinky walked into a Kroger one day without an owner in sight.

Maybe he needed help. Maybe he was hoping someone would point him toward the dog food aisle. 😂 Either way, his unexpected shopping trip eventually brought him to IACS—and we've learned quite a bit about this very good boy since then.

Slinky has been on multiple Doggy Days Out, and "polite gentleman" might be one of the best descriptions we've heard.

He's explored Newfields, walked through neighborhoods, visited dog-friendly businesses, dipped his feet in a lake and politely greeted people along the way. He's friendly and social without needing to be the center of everyone's attention.

One outing gave us an especially good glimpse of what Slinky might be like in a home. He wasn't interested in the resident cats or birds, calmly noticed another dog without being pushy, and wasn't bothered by barking dogs on his walk. He also did wonderfully with a 9-year-old who gave him a bath, brushed him, hugged him and handed him treats.

On another adventure, he happily explored Newfields, enjoyed a bath followed by some celebratory zoomies, relaxed beside his people during lunch and eventually curled up on someone's lap for the ride back to IACS.

Slinky arrived here because he wandered into a grocery store looking for somewhere to go.

We'd really like his next destination to be home. ❤️

Austro is giving us two very different versions of himself right now.

There's Austro inside his kennel: unsure and overwhelmed by everything happening around him.

And then there's Austro once you open that kennel door. ❤️

Staff have described him as "very sweet and cuddly" outside his kennel. On one outing, he was easy to leash, walked beautifully past rows of barking dogs without reacting and kept his attention on the person walking him—although having treats certainly helped. 😂

He wanted attention. He wanted snacks. He wanted to be close.

It's a pretty remarkable change for a dog who arrived at IACS terrified.

Austro was found as a stray at an elementary school. When an officer arrived, he was wide-eyed and so frightened that he ran anytime someone approached. Once he was safely at the shelter and began getting out of his kennel, we started seeing the friendly guy underneath all that fear.

Shelter life can still be a lot for Austro, and we've noticed that he's much more comfortable once he's away from the noise and activity of his kennel. It's outside those kennel walls that we get to see the cuddly, attentive and friendly dog staff have gotten to know.

Austro needs someone willing to look beyond what they might see through the kennel door and give him a chance to show them who he is once he feels more comfortable.

Carmen's whole world changed in a single day.

Her owner passed away, and Carmen came to IACS from the home they had shared. Now, at 8 years old, she's trying to figure out what happens next. ❤️

She's understandably unsure of unfamiliar people. Carmen isn't the dog who is going to run into a stranger's arms five minutes after meeting them. She needs time, patience and the freedom to decide when she's ready.

We've already seen little signs of progress.

During her first evaluation, Carmen kept her distance and wasn't comfortable being touched. More recently, our medical team took things slowly with her, gradually helping her become comfortable enough that she eventually sat in a staff member's lap while they examined her ears and teeth.

She's also had a calm introduction to another dog. Carmen approached cautiously with loose body language, exchanged several sniffs and was easily redirected afterward. We still don't know enough to say how she would do living with another dog, but it was a nice interaction to see.

We also know Carmen previously lived in a home with a cat, although we don't have information about their relationship.

Carmen has a soft mass on her chest that our veterinarian suspects is a lipoma. It is currently non-painful and doesn't require treatment, although an adopter can pursue additional care with their veterinarian if desired.

We don't know everything about Carmen's previous life. But we do know she had a person and a home, and suddenly both were gone.

She's not asking strangers to replace that overnight.

She's asking for someone willing to give her the time to feel safe again.

Young cats ready to play. Adults with plenty of personality. Older cats who appreciate the finer things in life, like a comfy bed and a good nap. Some want attention. Some are more independent. And some of our cats aren't looking for a spot on your couch at all—they're barn cats looking for a safe place to live and a job to do. 🌾
