Over 20 years ago, Jacksonville launched efforts to clean a polluted river. Out of those efforts birthed Sturgeon City Environmental Education Center which sits along Wilson Bay and the New River. This old wastewater treatment plant now stands as a reminder of where we came from and where we never want to end up again. Today, Sturgeon City trains next generation environmental leaders through educational programs and summer camps and hosts special events. Featuring a beautiful park with hills that overlook the water, a public boardwalk nestled through natural habitat, a kayak and canoe launch, and a new state-of-the-art multipurpose facility, Sturgeon City is certainly a place to explore in Jacksonville. Learn the story of Sturgeon City and what the facility has to offer at SturgeonCity.org #EarthDay50 #NCEarthDay50
This WRAL TV/ WRAL Tar Heel Traveler story from last year reminds us again of the work done to save our #NewRiver and the role Sturgeon City still plays in educating the next generation. #EarthDay
The New River in Onslow County was an environmental disaster. Jacksonville worked to restore it. Now, Sturgeon City is a reminder to never let it happen again.
