A trial of School vouchers was passed by the legislature a couple of years ago. It was a small drop in the education budget and mainly would have allowed a few North Omaha kids to escape failing public schools. It would have been funded by donors who then receive a tax credit. The teachers union wasn’t going to allow that. As long as they can keep school choice out of Nebraska, no one will notice how much better schools can be when they have to compete. Nebraska was one of only 2 states with no form of school choice. The state teachers union (NSEA) received nearly a million dollars from the National union (NEA) to defeat the vouchers by petition. Teachers and parents were gaslit to believe their public school would shut down. Paid circulators from out of state fear mongered the public into repealing the vouchers. The reason this is coming up again is because the incredibly competent Sherry Jones is running for reelection at the State Board of Education. Her opponent has accused her of voting for school vouchers. First of all, NEC doesn’t necessarily think that would be a problem, but nevertheless the SBOE does not make law, the legislature does. You would think a lawyer would know that. SBOE had nothing to do with the law nor the repeal. Sherry’s opponent has not apologized for the error. District 6 needs Sherry Jones to continue to be the champion for teachers and also for taxpayers that she has a proven record of being.
