Duplin County 4-H

Duplin County 4-H 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H is about having fun, learning, exploring and discovering.
(1)

In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities. More than 208,000 youth get involved in 4-H through community or project clubs, special interest programs, school enrichment programs, in after school programs, and through our Operation Military Kids program. These youth live in cities, suburbs, small towns and rural communities.

4-H gives youth a chance to explore their own interests - from photography to computers, from building rockets to raising animals. A list of 4-H projects is available online by visiting our 4-H Curriculum webpage. They go places from district retreats to camp, to state and national conferences. They learn to be outstanding citizens and excellent leaders. In 4-H, youth learn life skills such as public speaking, decision-making, organizational/planning, leadership, teamwork, record keeping and communications skills.

The 2021 Duplin County 4-H Food Show and Nutrition Contest will be held on Thursday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Duplin County Cooperative Extension Center in the Ed Emory Auditorium.

The contest will have three divisions. 4-H'ers between the ages of 8 and 13 will enter the junior division; members 14-19 will enter the senior division; and members 5-7 will participate in the Cloverbud division. In each division, contestants will enter a food from one of five food groups--milk, meat, fruit, vegetable, and grain. Other contest rules will be given once registered.

County winners will be selected in each food group in both the junior and senior divisions and will receive trophies at a later date. Participants in the Cloverbud division will receive 4-H activity certificates.

If you'd like to enter the show, call the 4-H office by no later than Monday, April 26 or email [email protected] to indicate the food group category you plan to enter. You then will receive additional information that will help you prepare for the event. The number for the 4-H office is 910.296.2143.

In addition, if you participate, masks must be worn by everyone in attendance at all times and temps will be checked upon arrival. We ask that no one brings additional spectators other than parents to keep the numbers at a minimum.

Also this year, no taste tasting by the judges or tasting of foods by the audience will be done.

04/03/2021

We can't have as many spectators as usual, but join us on our page for a LIVE feed of the event!

The Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office has received an increase in reports of online sexual predators attempting to exploit children in the community. In the past week, we have had two twelve-year-old females exploited; one female left home and traveled to Richmond, Virginia before she was located. One of the females used Tinder, a dating app, where she was able to appear older and meet predators. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, children have had more access and been more active on the internet than ever before. This has left them vulnerable to cyber predators.

Other jurisdictions are experiencing a type of exploitation known as sextortion. Sextortion begins when a predator reaches out to a young person over a video game, app, or social media account. Through deception, manipulation, money and gifts, or threats, the predator convinces the young person to produce an explicit video or image. When the young person starts to resist requests for more images, the predator will use threats of harm or exposure of the images to pressure the child to continue producing content.

Those involved in the sextortion of children often:

•Approach a child on social media after using it to learn about the child’s interests, friends, school, family, etc.
•Intentionally move their communications with the child from one online platform to another (e.g., moving from social media to private video chat or messaging apps)
•Use tactics to coerce a child, including:
o Reciprocation (“I’ll show you, if you show me”)
o Initially offering something to the child, such as money or drugs, in exchange for sexually explicit photos/videos
o Pretending to work for a modeling agency to obtain sexual images of the child
o Developing a bond with the child by establishing a friendship/romantic relationship
o Secretly recording sexually explicit videos of the child during video chats
o Physically threatening to hurt or sexually assault the child or the child’s family members
o Using multiple online identities to contact a child
o Pretending to be younger and/or a member of the opposite sex
o Accessing the child’s online account without authorization and stealing sexual images or videos of the child
o Threatening to create sexual images or videos of the child using digital-editing tools
o Saving sexually explicit conversations with the child and threatening to post them online

Please be vigilant against these predators by talking to your children, monitoring their phones for unapproved apps, explaining the dangers of predators, explaining that once a photo is sent it is out of their control, and to never share personal information over the internet. If you know of a child that has been enticed over the internet by a predator please contact your local law enforcement. More detailed information can be obtained from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
