Stand at the curb between two November yards.

YARD ONE is immaculate: every leaf bagged and gone, every perennial cut to a nub, beds edged sharp, a fresh blanket of dyed mulch. The neighborhood calls it "well kept."

YARD TWO looks... relaxed: leaves blanketing the beds, seed heads standing with juncos working them, a brush pile in the back corner, stems at pencil-holder height, one corner frankly wild.

Now run this series' ledger on each β€” because after 98 posts, you can:

πŸ“‹ YARD ONE, the audit: the luna moths and fritillaries left in the leaf bags ( #26, #36). The firefly larvae hauled to the curb ( #26). The queen bumble bees β€” 200 bees each β€” tilled or stripped of insulation ( #37). The native-bee nurseries in the cut stems, curbside ( #29). The goldfinch buffet, deadheaded ( #29). The toads with nowhere diggable ( #33), the mourning cloaks evicted from the vanished woodpile ( #36), the juncos with no cover ( #23), the chickadees' caterpillar economy hosted by... dyed mulch ( #22). Ecologically, Yard One is a DESERT WEARING A BOW TIE β€” and its owner PAID for every bag, blade-hour, and cubic yard of the emptiness.

πŸ“‹ YARD TWO spent that money on nothing β€” did strategically LESS β€” and owns: July fireflies, April butterflies that overwintered on-site, spring queens founding colonies, a winter feeder scene with actual habitat behind it, free mulch, free fertilizer, and free plants ( #65). "Messy" was a purchase too. It bought LIFE.

🀝 AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD PROBLEM β€” solved by people who've walked this road:
β†’ THE CUES-TO-CARE PRINCIPLE (real landscape research): humans read "cared for" from a few visual signals, not from tidiness itself. Keep a MOWN EDGE β€” a crisp strip of cut lawn framing wilder beds β€” and the wildest yard reads as intentional. A border tells the street: this is design, not neglect.
β†’ THE SIGN: a small "Wildlife Habitat" / "Pollinator Garden" placard (certification programs mail them) converts the same square footage from "lazy" to "principled" in the neighborhood's eyes. It's astonishing and it works.
β†’ Front-yard diplomacy: keep the streetside strip conventional-ish; let the backyard go full sanctuary. Every post in this series works at 60% intensity.
β†’ HOA country: the mown edge + sign + native SHRUBS (which read as landscaping β€” #90, #91, #93's swap lists) is the proven compliance package

The question was never tidy versus messy.

It's decor versus ALIVE β€” and whether the yard's budget feeds a landfill or a food web.

One mown edge. One small sign. Everything else can live.

Share this with someone bracing for neighborhood judgment β€” the research and the juncos are on their side. πŸ‘πŸ’š
