Recently, residents from Delaware DOC’s Sussex Community Corrections Center (SCCC) provided community service in collaboration with Scout Matthew Hanna of Troop One of the Del-Mar-Va Council of the Scouts BSA to help complete his Eagle Scout project focused on environmental conservation and community improvement in Sussex County.

As part of the project, SCCC officers and residents volunteered their time and effort to help prepare the site for more than 300 trees and shrubs to be planted by the Scouts. The initiative aimed to educate the community on the importance of maintaining a 50-foot or more natural buffer zone around new developments to help protect wildlife habitats as Sussex County continues to grow.

The six SCCC residents who participated in the project, earned community service credit while making a positive impact on their local community. Their hard work and dedication helped bring the project to life and demonstrated the contributions they can make through community partnerships and service opportunities.

The Delaware DOC is proud of the SCCC residents who participated and congratulates Matthew on earning his Eagle Scout badge through this important project.

That’s a wrap on the 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐃𝐎𝐂 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲! 👏

Week #6 brought participants to Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle, where they got an in-depth look at how the DOC advances its reentry mission—supporting individuals during incarceration and through their transition back home as they pursue a new pathway to success.

The evening also included presentations from staff and incarcerated participants from BWCI’s Road 2 Recovery and 6 for 1 therapeutic and treatment programs, dialogue with Warden Hollingsworth and facility leaders, a prison tour, and certificate presentations from Commissioner Taylor.

Thank you to this Spring’s Citizens Academy graduates for making the time to learn about Delaware’s correctional system and to the many DOC staff members who spent time with the class over the past six weeks.

A special shoutout to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center Culinary Arts program for providing desserts for the Citizens Academy participants to enjoy.

Interested in joining a future Citizens Academy? Stay connected with us here on social media for updates and upcoming opportunities.

Congratulations to the team at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown for achieving accreditation through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC)!

This week, SCI was recognized for its compliance with NCCHC’s nationally recognized standards for health services in prisons—an achievement that reflects a strong commitment to delivering quality care to the incarcerated population.

Earning this accreditation required a comprehensive and rigorous assessment by a team of experienced physicians and correctional healthcare experts. The review evaluated critical areas including patient care and treatment, health promotion, safety and disease prevention, governance and administration, personnel and training, special needs services, and medical-legal standards.

This accomplishment highlights the dedication of SCI staff and reinforces the Delaware Department of Correction’s ongoing commitment to high-quality, evidence-based healthcare.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to our healthcare partner, VitalCore Health Strategies, for their continued collaboration and support in achieving this milestone.
