Three days. 40+ students. 10 state agencies. One big question. Can AI actually make government work better?

That's what Hennovate the State set out to answer this week at UD's FinTech Innovation Hub. Students from UD, Penn State, and local high schools teamed up with state employees who brought real problems to the table, from records management to transportation planning to child support services. Mentors from AWS, Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA jumped in too, helping teams turn ideas into working prototypes in just three days.

This is what happens when government opens its doors to fresh thinking. Some of these ideas might just show up in the tools Delawareans use every day.

Hatching bold ideas for the First State.

Happy World Honey Bee Day! DTI is buzzing about it for reasons beyond honey.

Bees ran a data network long before we did. When a scout bee finds a good food source, they come back to the hive and do a waggle dance that tells the rest of the colony the direction, distance, and quality of the find. It's a coded signal the whole hive can read and act on. Not so different from how our own systems pass information along: encode it, send it, let the network respond.

We also want to give a shoutout to Brockmeyer, an amazing partner and beekeeper. We're looking forward to learning more about the incredible work of raising honey bees AND keeping Delawareans connected!

Happy from all of us at DTI!

Meet Zoe.🐾

She's the newest member of a DTI employee's family, and she's already got everyone wrapped around her paw!

Thanks to a new partnership between Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Division of Public Health Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) and Petco Love Lost, if Zoe ever wandered off, her family's chances of getting her back just got a lot better!

Here's how it works: upload a photo of a lost or found pet, and AI photo-matching technology compares it against listings from shelters and pet owners across the country. Delaware is the first state in the nation to use this system statewide, building on a lost and found registry OAW has run since 2016. Another great example of how AI can be safely leveraged to solve real-world problems.

Petco Love Lost has already reunited more than 250,000 pets with their families nationwide. Now Delaware pet parents have that same network working for them!
