This morning we had a breaker operation on a circuit along Rt. 10 in the southern portion of our service territory. The cause was a lightning strike ⚡ from a passing storm. A set of lightning arresters saved the circuit from staying open, and the circuit reclosed automatically on our normal protection scheme — so for most customers, this was a brief blink rather than a sustained outage.

What is a lightning arrester, you may ask? Think of it as a utility-scale surge protector. Similar to the surge protectors in your home, a lightning arrester protects our equipment — and your electronics at home — in the event the system takes a lightning strike. Unlike the surge protector in your home, though, our "surge protectors" are one-time use. Once they do their job protecting against a surge, they have to be replaced. ⚡

To prevent electrical issues, major appliances should be plugged
directly into the wall to ensure they have a dedicated circuit and
won’t overload your system. When in doubt, have a qualified
electrician inspect your home to make sure your electrical
system can handle your needs. If you get a mild shock or tingle
from an appliance or switch, it could be a sign of a device failing.

Overloading your home’s electrical system can cause a fire. If your lights start to flicker or dim; smell burning, see discolored switches or feel warm outlets, these could be signs of a serious wiring problem.
