MEDIA RELEASE - FATAL STRUCTURE FIRE LINCOLN STREET

Date: May 16, 2026
From: City of Ketchikan
Ketchikan Fire Department
Contact: Kim Simpson, Public Information Officer, 907-228-5458

For Immediate Release

Ketchikan Fire Department was notified of a structure fire at a residence located on Lincoln Street, Ketchikan, AK at 2:28 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026. Ketchikan Fire Department, along with North Tongass Fire Department and South Tongass Fire Department responded to the blaze. A Ketchikan Police Department officer was on scene by 2:29 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and fire emanating from the second story of the structure.

Ketchikan Fire crews were on site by 2:32 a.m., and water was on the blaze by 2:38 a.m.
The first victim of the fire was discovered by firefighters at 2:47 a.m.

With multiple crew’s assistance, the fire was brought under control at 2:56 a.m. and a search was conducted throughout the residence for additional victims. The search was hampered by excess debris and due to the intensity of the fire. A second victim was located in the residence at 2:56 a.m. No other victims were found.

The fire was completely contained by 3:26 a.m. and the majority of the fire crew left the scene by 5:00 a.m. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation by Ketchikan Police Department, Ketchikan Fire Department, and the State of Alaska Fire Marshall. The public is asked to avoid Lincoln Street due to the limited space and the ongoing investigation.

One South Tongass Firefighter was transported to Ketchikan Medical Center with cardiac complaints after emerging from the fire. They are being evaluated in the KMC Emergency Room.

During the fire, power was cut to surrounding homes by KPU but has since been restored.

Ketchikan Fire Department medics also responded to nine separate medical events elsewhere in the community beginning at 9:00 p.m. May 15, 2026 and continuing through the fire until 5:00 a.m.

Questions and media inquiries should be directed to the Public Information Officer for this event, Kim Simpson, at 907-228-5458, 907-204-0010, or at [email protected], or KFD Chief Rick Hines at 907-228-2361, or at [email protected] .
