Staff Profile: Michelle Maas, Director of Direct Assistance Programs

Michelle Maas has only been in her role since December but she’s already making a huge impact at Cristo Rey, where she oversees all direct assistance programs. Such programs include the food pantry, personal needs pantry, community kitchen/cafeteria, clothing closet and the diaper program.

“I do this job because it’s important to Christ Jesus,” Michelle said. “The Lord Jesus loved me enough at a time in my life when I didn’t know how to love myself so now, I aim to please Him by sharing His grace, love, mercy and discipline.”

Although some days it’s a struggle, Michelle loves her job, especially when people come to Cristo Rey looking to Christ for help. She loves modeling the journey to finding faith.

“The Word of God says, ‘the Harvest is plenty but labors are few,’” Michelle said. “For me, it’s simple: I want to be part of the solution not the problem. We need more people to stand tall and stand up for what’s right.”

Services include well child visits, telehealth services, sports physicals, management of chronic illnesses and more. From March to June, 150 clients in our counseling center, located in both our Cristo Rey and St. Vincent campuses, received substance use disorder treatment services by attending 452 individual sessions and/or 36 group sessions. In addition, 110 people participated in prevention programming by attending one or more of 36 different group training sessions.

At our counseling center, no one is denied access to services due to inability to pay. Our goal is to empower our community members to overcome challenges and build healthier futures.

Volunteer of the Month: Mustafa Al-Tameemi, Volunteer Translator (Arabic), Immigration Law Clinic

Mustafa is an immigrant whose family came to the United States in 2013. CCIEC helped them through paperwork, applications and the process of settling into their new lives.

He mostly interprets conversations related to green card applications. But he’s also assisted clients who have general questions about immigration or who need help communicating with the ILC team.

“For me, volunteering is a way to give back. My own family received help when we arrived in the United States, and I understand how valuable that support can be. I believe one of the most important needs is accurate communication. Immigration matters can already be complicated, and a language barrier can lead to delays or misunderstandings.”
