School is back in session, which means school buses are back on our roads. 🚌

A quick reminder for drivers: When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, traffic in both directions must stop unless the roadway is separated by a physical barrier or unpaved median.

Please stay alert, slow down and help keep students safe as they travel to and from school.

Congratulations to Captain Wade Borchers, who retired today after 28 years of dedicated service to the Lenexa Police Department and our community.

Throughout his career, Captain Borchers served in a variety of roles, including patrol officer, narcotics detective, directed patrol officer, patrol supervisor, investigations supervisor, and watch commander. His leadership and commitment to professional growth also led him to graduate from the FBI National Academy, Session 266.

Captain Borchers has been a strong advocate for mental health awareness throughout his career. He played an active role in statewide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) efforts, served on the Johnson County Mental Health Advisory Board, and served on the CIT International Board of Directors. His work in this area has made an impact well beyond our department and community.

For nearly three decades, Captain Borchers has served Lenexa with dedication, leadership, and professionalism. We are grateful for his many contributions to our department, his fellow officers, and the community he has served.

Congratulations, Captain Borchers, on an outstanding career. We wish you all the best in a well-earned retirement!

Our School Resource Officer Unit has been serving Lenexa schools for more than 30 years. Today, the unit consists of six school resource officers (SROs) and a supervisor who work closely with students, staff and families throughout the school year.

🎒 School’s back and so are busy mornings (and afternoons)! 🚌

As students head back to class this week, remember that our streets will look a little different than they did during summer break.

🚗 Drivers: Slow down, leave a little earlier, and watch for students near schools, neighborhoods, and crosswalks.

🅿️ Parking: Please obey all posted traffic and parking signs around schools. Avoid stopping or parking in restricted areas, even if it’s “just for a minute.” These restrictions help maintain visibility, traffic flow, and safe access around our schools.

🚦 Afternoon pickup: The end of the school day typically brings some of the heaviest congestion around our schools. Expect delays, be patient with other drivers, and allow yourself extra time. Please don’t let a frustrating pickup line lead to an unsafe driving decision.

🚌 School buses: Be prepared for frequent stops and please do not pass when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.

🚶 Parents: Please teach children to use sidewalks and crosswalks when available, to look both ways before crossing, and keep eyes up, not on their phone.

🚲 Bicyclists: Wear a helmet, follow traffic laws and make yourself visible to drivers.

📵 Everyone: Whether you’re driving, walking or biking, distractions can wait.

A little patience and a few extra minutes can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

UPDATE, 8/4/26 AT 9:30 PM - Matthew has been located and is safe.

The Lenexa Kansas Police Department is seeking information on the whereabouts of Matthew Morris, 16 years of age.

Matthew was last seen on Monday, August 3rd, at approximately 6:29 p.m., leaving Sam's Club in the 12200 block of W 95th Street Lenexa Ks.

Matthew is a 16-year-old male, approximately 5'10" tall and 134 lbs. Unknown clothing description.

At this time, information indicates Matthew has run away, and no foul play is suspected. However, his family is concerned for his welfare.

Anyone with information on Matthew's whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Whether you're planning to grill or gather with friends, keep in mind these Fourth of July safety tips.

1) Fireworks are illegal in Lenexa. Sparklers, snakes, smoke bombs, and paper caps with less than 0.25 grain of explosive powder are allowed. 🎇

2) Grill smart. Keep grills at least 10 feet from siding, deck railings and overhangs. Keep an extinguisher nearby. 🍗

3) Be careful with sparklers. They can heat up to 1,200 degrees! Keep the kids safe by giving them glow sticks instead. * ✨

*According to the National Fire Protection Association, sparklers accounted for 29% of fireworks injuries for children under age 5 in 2022.
